MULTICULTURAL & WORLD MUSIC
Gong Xi Gong Xi (Congratulations!)—Chen
Ge Xin/arr. Lily Lung Grant. This festive piece is
one of the most well-known and popular songs to
celebrate Chinese New Year. Originally composed
to celebrate the end of the Second World War,
it simply means "congratulations," making it
appropriate for programming throughout the
year. Sing in English or Chinese with the helpful
pronunciation guide. Includes optional percussion
parts. Highly recommended!

H Haida—arr. Henry Leck. Based on a Chassidic
round, this arrangement is excellent to help a
beginning chorus to sing together in parts. First
sung in unison, then in a three-part round, the
music is fun and easily accessible. The word
"Haida" has no specific meaning, but is meant
to be treated much like "lah" in American
folk music.

HL Halle, Halle, Halle—arr. Hal Hopson. This
Caribbean tune may well be the most popular
of the new multicultural songs that have found
their way into the choral repertoire. Hal Hopson's
setting of this infectious melody is one that will
have your listeners humming and singing along.
The perfect combination of original verses by
Hal and the easy optional percussion make this
setting irresistibly catching!

meaning of the Hebrew text is universal, as is the

t In Meeting We Are Blessed—Troy Robertson
& R. Gatsnahos. The part for djembe imparts a
traditional African feeling to this easy, original
a cappella work. The Gatsnahos text, inspired
by John Donne, has a theme of friendship and
unity that all can relate to. "We are met together
and in meeting we are blessed. Peace in coming
and in going, peace in labor and in rest..." This is
accessible to choirs at many levels, and it makes a
wonderful processional!

in Eastern Europe, is a variation on the common
theme of a spurned lover, but with a twist at the
end! A full English singable translation is provided
in the score, of you can choose to sing in Yiddish,
which is an amalgamation of German and Hebrew
and was the primary language of Northern
European Jews for hundreds of years. A wonderful

t This highly dramatic traditional African song is a
true musical gem, presented a cappella at a slower
tempo. Arranged by two South African composers,
the ethnic flavor is palpable as the upper voices
carry the melody and the lower voices provide the
harmonic underlay in the SATB version, while the
SSA version uses a small ensemble to present the
melody with the remainder of the choir providing
the harmony. Translation and pronunciation notes
are provided.
