Sidewinder (Little Big Band)—Lee Morgan/
arr. Mark Taylor. One of the early and soulful
jazz/rock tunes, Lee Morgan's Sidewinder
features a distinctive groove and funky, riff-like
phrases. In this arrangement for little big band,
a trio of trumpet, tenor and guitar state the
head in the beginning joined later by the rest
of the ensemble. Suggested solos are included
for trumpet, tenor and drums along with chord/
scale sheets in all keys. Instrumentation: 3
Saxes; 2 Trumpets; 1 Trombone plus Rhythm
Section. For flexibility, optional parts are included
for Alto and Tenor Saxes and Trombone.

Sir Duke—Stevie Wonder/arr. Michael Mossman.
In 1977 Stevie Wonder was in his prime and Sir
Duke was on top of the charts. Michael Philip
Mossman takes this familiar hit and adds his own
unique touch. The opening features the brass with
sax section fills. The middle section goes into a
double-time swing and includes a solo for tenor
sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum break. All
the familiar lines from the original are there too!
Suggested solos are included along with scale/
chord sheets in all keys. Highly recommended!

tempo Latin/rock chart is pure fun. The low voices
start it out, followed by the melody statement in the
saxes, punctuated by brass hits. Then the melody
moves to the brass with a sax counter-line. The
solos are for tenor and trumpet, then there's a solo
spot for the drums. The chart ends as it began, with
a declarative statement from the full band.

Composed by Eugene McDaniels in the 1960s, this soulful funk tune
has been recorded by a number of artists, notably Les McCann and
Eddie Harris, Ray Charles, and Al Jarreau. John Wasson's version for
big band features a churning groove and nice interplay between various
sections of the band. The suggested soloist is alto sax, however the solo

Running with Scissors—Gordon Goodwin.
Running with Scissors is a very hip, funky groove chart played around 168
bpm. It's loaded with classic Gordon Goodwin flair, plus sample solos are
provided for C instruments, E-flat alto or bari saxes, B-flat tenor, B-flat
trumpet, and trombone. It begins as a nice, quiet funk groove, develops,
and has great textural variation between the rhythm section and horns.
The lead trumpet range is to written high C with an optional D. Included
is an auxiliary percussion part and optional parts for flute and vibes. More
accessible than many Gordon Goodwin charts, your band and its audiences
will totally enjoy this one. Highly recommended!

Step on a Crack—Rick Lawn.
Rick Lawn brings us a funky take on a stretched-out blues form with
a slippery melody and sophisticated harmonies. All goes according
to plan through the melody and alto sax solo. A challenging unison
brass soli follows and leads into a unique musical environment where
soloists (one, few, or many) trade two-bar phrases with the ensemble.
This provides lots of room for experimentation and freedom for the
improvisers, since they aren't limited to a particular harmony or chord.
A brief drum solo returns to the melody and a gospel-tinged coda. The
trumpet range is to written B-flat with optional high D. A challenging
chart that is well worth the effort, this is one of best funk charts we've
heard! Highly recommended!

This Time/Last Year is a gorgeous, lyrical Metheny-style tune in
6/4. Featured are flugelhorn, alto and tenor on a haunting melody
accompanied by plenty of ensemble power and a "bring the house
down" drum solo. This is truly concert jazz material. The solos are
for flugelhorn and drums along with a challenging written piano part.
There are optional easy flute doubles and the lead trumpet range goes
