BLUES & SWING
4 Catwalk—Andrew Neu. Inspired by the music of
Henry Mancini and the spy movies of the 1960s,
Catwalk is a cool jazz, minor swing tune featuring
alto saxophone, trumpet and guitar on the melody
at first, then written or improvised solos for alto
sax and trumpet. Dynamic contrasts provide a
potent vehicle for the individual sections and the
full ensemble. Not your typical swing chart, this is
a super choice as a change-of-pace chart!

H Dat Dere—Bobby Timmons/arr. Erik Morales. A
soulful tune with a catchy title and melody! Erik
Morales captures composer Bobby Timmons'
medium swing groove. At a moderate tempo,
with a slightly mysterious intro, the saxes grab the
melody and it builds from there. A written (or ad
lib) alto solo is provided with a fat shout chorus.
This is an outstanding chart in every respect!
Highly recommended!

4 Delta Queen—Greg Moody. This rollicking
original New Orleans-style chart will take you
right to Bourbon Street for Mardi Gras! It's an
exciting second-line journey in a familiar swing/
rock style that will have audiences demanding an
encore. There are suggested solos included for
alto sax 1, tenor sax 1 and trumpet 2 along with
chord changes for improvisation. The ranges and
rhythmic demands are moderate for this level.
Make sure to check this one out!

4 Finley Blues—Chris Scarnato. This straight-
ahead, swinging blues chart is just what the
doctor ordered! With reasonable brass ranges,
there's plenty of call-and-response writing
between the sax section and brass. There's also
an open solo section for anyone with changes
included. A great set of shout choruses brings
this one to an effective close. This one will be fun!

Fly Me to the Moon—Bart Howard/arr. Allen
Gray. Oh, jazz standards just don't get any better
than Bart Howard's Fly Me to the Moon! This
chart pays homage to the great Count Basie
band and their iconic version with Frank Sinatra.
With a subtle swingin' opening, this chart builds
into a big tutti section before there's room for
improvised solos. Finally, the band enters again to
swing it hard all the way to the end. This one's got
to be in your jazz library. Highly recommended!

4 Great Minds Swing Alike—Erik Sherburne.
Jazz bands can't swing if they aren't swinging
together, and Great Minds Swing Alike is just the
chart to prove it! It swings hard right off the top
with a sax soli, then a trumpet soli as the melody
is passed through the band while the rhythm
section digs in with a steady groove. The changes
are simple allowing for an open solo section and
the brass ranges are modest. Also included is a
big time shout chorus and a cool ending. It's a
great opener to get the crowd in the mood or a
super closer to leave them wanting more!

H Hey Pachuco!—arr. Shane Porter. Your students
and audiences will love this burning swing tune
made famous by Royal Crown Revue. The groove
is set up with a drum solo laying down a Sing,
Sing, Sing Krupa feel before the band enters. A
trumpet with plunger solo leads into a sax soli
section. Next, the trumpet section is featured on
a soli section before a half-time feel gives the
brass a chance to shine. Returning to the original
groove, a written solo for tenor sax heightens the
excitement. Finally, there's an open drum solo
before the band enters and takes it on home. Pure
excitement!

H In the Mood—Joe Garland. This Glenn Miller
classic is a must for every jazz band library!
Carefully edited and available with a full score, this
arrangement has everything you need to recreate
the original including a trumpet solo, and a short
call-and-response passage between the alto and
tenor saxes. It's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!

4 Knuckleball Blues—Paul Baker. This is a
medium swing "blues with a bridge" chart that
plays off the unusual nature of a knuckleball's
trajectory and flight characteristics. Lots of
fun "wobbles" and misdirection bring this
hard-swinging chart home in the melody and
orchestration. Solo space is provided for tenor
sax and trumpet with plenty of backgrounds as
well. The trumpet range is to written High C above
the staff. A full-bodied shout chorus follows the
solos before returning to the bridge and closing
tag. Swings hard!

H Moanin'—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew Homzy.
Here's a playable yet very effective arrangement
of this signature Mingus composition. The familiar
baritone sax riff is handled by three saxes, and
there is also a substantial soli for the entire
saxophone section. Optional parts are included
for flute, clarinet and French horn. A terrific
introduction to the genius of Mingus!

H Out of the Doghouse—Erik Morales. Arranger/
composer Erik Morales delivers! This outstanding
shuffle chart sounds like a big old freight train
coming down the tracks, and it just builds and
builds! There's a wonderful section after the
optional solos that features a powerful sax soli
without the rhythm section, and there are great
breaks for piano and drums throughout. There
are also some independent bari sax lines and
optional written solos for alto, tenor and guitar.
The lead trumpet range is to written A above the
staff and there's an optional ending with lead
trumpet notes up to C. This is a hot chart! Our
highest recommendation! Optional expanded
instrumentation.

4 Point, Counterpoint—Ellen Rowe. More
advanced groups have come to know that Ellen
Rowe's name on a chart means that the music
is of the highest quality. Now musicians at the
medium level can explore her talents as well. This
straight-ahead swing chart with a unique melodic
and harmonic structure lets everyone get in on
the action. Features ample solo space and plenty
of full ensemble work. A must-have!
10882592 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52.00
The Queen Bee—Sammy Nestico. Penned by
Sammy Nestico, this chart is a relaxed moderate
blues. Written for the Basie/Nestico collaboration
on the album Basie-Straight Ahead, it's perfect
for advancing groups. It is also a great chart for
your rhythm section to develop that wonderful
Basie sound and feel. A must for every jazz
ensemble library!

H Shiny Stockings—Frank Foster/arr. Greg
Yasinitsky. Frank Foster's composition Shiny
Stockings is one of the greatest jazz tunes ever
for big band. Arranged by Greg Yasinitsky and
scored at an accessible level, this chart has
all the ingredients you expect plus a few short
section solis and an ensemble shout chorus. This
arrangement stays very close to the original, yet
is more accessible for developing groups. Other
features include a written solo for 2nd trumpet
with the lead trumpet range to written A above
the staff. This Basie classic belongs in every jazz
library! Highly recommended! Optional expanded
instrumentation.
10071900 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52.00
H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/trans. Mike
Lewis. Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable
swing tune of all time! This incredible transcription
is as close as you're going to come to the original
(which included clarinet and less than a full
compliment of brass). This chart is scored for a
standard 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and
rhythm, but aside from that, it is the original as
played by Benny Goodman. Every lick is there,
including all the Gene Krupa drum breaks! This
chart is a must for every big band's library!
