BLUES & SWING
H Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Vince
Gassi. This chart swings all the way and is very
playable by a young jazz ensemble. Arranger
Vince Gassi offers a fresh take on this classic,
yet captures the essence of this well-known
Strayhorn composition made famous by
Ellington. It's scored exactly right for younger
players... not too difficult but with fun-to-play
parts. With brief written solos for 1st alto sax and
1st trumpet, and easy ranges, it also has plenty of
dynamics to teach. A superb chart you will play
for years to come! Optional reduced or expanded
instrumentation.

H Abracadabra—Larry Barton. The magic of this
slinky swinger will put your audience under a spell!
The lead wind players start things out on the head,
but before long the full band is jamming along. It's
an "in your face" chart that's all about attitude!

H Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here
is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad!
The arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and
there are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that
swing in this way. The arrangement suggests
flugelhorns throughout, although trumpets
would work just fine. There is solo space for alto
saxophone and trumpet/flugel. Very nice!

H Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter
Blair. This is a great old tune! Except...there's
nothing "old" sounding about it. It's a medium
swing version of a marvelous, often-played
standard that opens with an alto and trumpet
duet and is filled with tight ensemble punches.
The saxes are featured on a chorus and there is a
written or ad lib solo for piano.

big band in a funky medium tempo. Combining
the elements of New Orleans second line and
contemporary rock styles, this unique chart
features a blend of catchy riffs, solid ensemble
passages, and stop-time breaks. There are short
written or ad lib solos for trumpet and tenor. This
chart exudes a spirited and unmistakable New
Orleans swagger!

Bacon Suite Blues—Bret Zvacek. Bret Zvacek's
accessible chart on the blues not only has a
clever title, it's a laid-back swinger that's lays
right in the pocket! There's nothing like a straight-
ahead, medium blues chart for teaching the
essential elements of jazz playing. Bacon Suite
Blues has it all: a strong melody, solid ensemble
writing, varying dynamics and an optional open
solo section with included solo sheets. There's a
soft ensemble section after the solos that builds
to a wonderful shout and then a trombone section
soli, then more hard-driving and down home
swing leading to a cool finale. A great chart with
great writing that's highly recommended!

4 Blues of a Kind—Mark Colby/arr. Doug Beach.
This swinging blues chart in 3/4 meter is a nod
to Miles Davis' classic All Blues. Doug Beach's
arrangement frames the tune with influences from
both Davis and the composer's own improvised
lines. While the chart has plenty of full-ensemble
work, there is also an open solo section that
will provide a great showcase for your talented
soloists. Sample solos are included, and there's
a wonderful section where the individual horn
sections alternate with the full ensemble. Very
nice and highly recommended!
