The trombones get the spotlight to start with, followed by tight ensemble playing and later space for an improvised or written trombone solo. This chart is cool, confident and colorful! As the title suggests, Don't Let Up, doesn't let up. A groovin' shuffle bass line starts it off and then the band kicks it and it's show time! Each section gets its moment in the spotlight followed by a solo section with straight-ahead blues changes that can be opened up to feature individual players. A sample solo is scored in the alto sax 1 part with chord changes in all parts. A great opener to get the crowd going! This Peter Blair chart on the Neal Hefti/ Count Basie classic is a wonderful adaptation for younger jazz groups. It does its Basie thing with a light and cool swing feel, includes nice changes in texture, has brief written or ad lib solos for alto sax and trumpet 2, and an outstanding shout chorus with drum fills. Played at 156 bpm, the trumpet 1 range is up to written G on top of the staff, and optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. This chart is a fun tribute to Regents Professor Emeritus, Jim Riggs of the Univerity of North Texas. In the Nestico style, it captures his personality and sense of humor while providing a focus on the saxophone section. The chart begins in the key of F and modulates to B-flat. Written solos are provided for alto sax and trumpet and/or piano, and the trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff. A swinging shout chorus drives to a restatement of the melody before bringing everything to a close with the ensemble. A great sounding chart for an exceptional saxophonist, teacher, and friend. Using the traditional English folk song as a basis, Paul Murtha found a creative treatment as an up- tempo jazz waltz! With a natural flowing groove, this swinging chart opens with a trio of alto, trumpet and trombone on the main theme. There's also great scoring for the entire ensemble along with suggested or improvised solos for the three featured players.
