I grew up in small-town west Texas—football country.
I was lucky to have a great choir director, but actually
composing was way off my radar. Then I happened
to visit a friend of my parents who had a piano in
the corner. On the piano was a sheet of manuscript
paper with some notes scratched out in pencil. When
I asked about it, he said, "Oh that's just a composition
I'm working on." That's when it hit me—a composer
didn't have to come from Paris or Vienna or New York.
A composer could come from anywhere. I could be a
composer. I went home that night and worked on my
first original piece. It was awful (so were the second,
third, fourth, fifth…). But eventually I got the hang of
it! So for anyone who is wondering about their own
voice, know that it's not about the place where you
are. It's about being in touch with the place in you.

I came to know the texts of the Psalms from a very
young age; as a boy chorister at Kings College Cambridge, we sang Psalms to a variety of Anglican chants
on a daily basis in the service of Evensong. A little
later, when my musical curiosity drew me to the work
of many fine composers, I admired how these ancient
words could be further enhanced by sensitive musical settings. And throughout my own compositional
career time and again I have been drawn back to the
poetry of those 150 chapters, which encompass every
possible emotion in their praise of God in language
of the most wonderful richness. If ever I feel the need
to seek inspiration through a meaningful text for an
anthem or motet, I am so often drawn back to those
well-thumbed pages of my Bible.
