4 The Voice That I Hear—Jim Papoulis. Young
people often know how to speak to the heart of
matters more clearly than adults. Here, in the
words of seventh graders, we hear that we all
have voices singing to us, inspiring us and leading
us to evolve. We learn that our own individual
voices are important, make us creative, make us
unique, and deserve to be celebrated. The music
is vintage Papoulis in rhythmic elements and
world style, and is accessible for younger voices.

l Walk with Me Lord—Rosephanye Powell.
You have to hear it to believe it. The National
AGO commissioned this beloved spiritual to
be arranged with organ accompaniment. Who
else but Rosephanye Powell understands both
mediums well enough to make them merge into
such a pleasing and powerful expression? Church
choirs will find it most appealing, but schools with
access to organ will also enjoy it. Easy to medium
in difficulty.

l We Pray to Be at Peace from "Missa Gaia"
—Libby Larsen. We Pray to Be at Peace is move-
ment II of the work, "Missa Gaia," by composer
Libby Larsen. Marked "II. Kyrie: Mother, Sister,
Blessed, Honored" in the score, this gentle and
lyrical two-minute piece is a prayer for humility
and awareness. The form and spirit of the "Missa
Gaia" is the traditional Mass combining words that
speak of human beings' relationship to the Earth.
The texts are drawn from the Bible, from Native
American poets Joy Harjo and Maurice Kenny,
from medieval mystic Meister Eckhart, from the
Chinook Psalter, and from poets M. K. Dean,
Wendell Berry, and Gerard Manley Hopkins.

l When Laura Smiles—Philip Rossete/arr.
Steven Rickards. Originally a lute song, this
work is inspired by the galliard, a popular dance
throughout Europe during the time of Elizabeth
I. The text speaks of and celebrates the many
virtues and charms of Laura with the music having
all the charm of an accompanied madrigal. Quick
and sprightly, this is excellent literature for any
young treble ensemble.
