le Song of Miriam—Elaine Hagenberg. Inspired
by the empowering poem by Rabbi Ruth Sohn,
this piece describes the journey of a young
woman who finds bravery amid uncertainty
and fear. Middle Eastern harmonies paint an
expansive desert landscape, while the voices
search for faith and risk taking the first step,
ultimately conquering fear to find the "song in
my heart." Soaring melodies and choral rhythms
that create a delicious tension against the piano
accompaniment make this a wonderful choice for
mature treble choirs.

n Sunlight—J. W. Keckley. With only a flute accom-
paniment, this arrangement sets the wonderful
words of the poet Lily Band sometimes as
a soundscape, sometimes as a tone poem,
and sometimes as just a mood or feeling. The
harmonies and flowing vocal lines give new life to
this very expressive text.

4 Sunset (The River Sleeps Beneath the Sky)—
Mary Donnelly & George L.O. Strid. This beautiful
and thoughtful setting of the Paul Laurence
Dunbar poem includes parts for Orff instruments
(glockenspiel and bass metallophone) and an
optional flute obbligato that make this piece
really special. Unison voices anchor the song,
followed by two-part writing that allows for vocal
independence. This is a wonderful teaching
vehicle for your students to discover dynamic
contrasts, beautiful word painting, and a chance
to learn about one of America's earliest and most
important African American poets.

Le Take What You Can Carry—Patti Drennan. In
all of us lies the confidence to succeed in life; if
disappointment or adversity gets in the way, pick
yourself up, start over, and strive again to achieve
your goal. This message is combined with
smoothly accessible choral writing and a lightly
rhythmic accompaniment for developing mixed
choirs. A great choice for a year-end concert or
moving-on ceremony.

4LThixo Onothando—arr. Michael Barrett. A popu-
t lar South African song of praise, the texture
is dominated by three soloists who portray
leadership roles in the community. Layering
choral parts develop the harmonic structure,
while free interpretation of clapping, stomping,
percussion and movement are encouraged.
Cascading hosannas in the final section add
a special dimension to the otherwise rhythmic
a cappella setting. Exciting!

n Three American Folk Songs—Michael John
Trotta. This energetic, artfully arranged slice of
Americana includes three familiar tunes set atop
a piano and violin part that captures the energy,
optimism and beauty of the American spirit. It
weaves the joyful energy of Cindy with the lyric
beauty of The Water Is Wide and finishes with the
unencumbered fun of Old Dan Tucker. Optional
claps, snaps, and foot stomps add an additional
layer of rhythmic interest and fun. Perfect
for festival or as an opener or closer for your
next concert.

l Thunder Drums (Sounds of Nature)—Roger
Emerson. "Street" bucket drumming has be-
come a popular music classroom activity and
is appealing because of its reliance on found
materials, the overabundance of plastic, and its
general coolness factor. This dynamic original
pairs bucket drums with choir, seamlessly
blending the two disciplines into a rock anthem
with style. Creative and original!

ltTime Slows Beyond All Reason—Michael John
e Trotta. Repeated rhythmic choral parts create the
underlying pulse and sense of the movement of
time in this a cappella work. Lyric melodies are
interspersed with cluster chord cadences and
moments of release to set the text "Time slows
beyond all reason, yielding to something more...
Falling through myself I find my way to you."

4LTingalayo—arr. Mark Weston. This traditional
e West Indies folk song about a little donkey begins
with all voices singing the refrain in unison; the
simple harmony introduced later moves mostly
in step-wise fashion. A relaxed piano part and
optional shaker and claves create the perfect
groove for a unique concert offering for young
treble choirs.

le To the Thawing Wind (from "A Boy's Will")—
Jimmy Baas. This work, using a text from a poem
by Robert Frost, is both whimsical and angular
due to the juxtaposition of melody and multi-meter
that occurs throughout the piece. Sure to afford
skilled treble choirs musical growth opportunities,
it is appropriate for any concert or festival. The
optional flute part is included in the score.

oulis. Conceived as a way to honor the bravery
of military men and women, as well as honoring
mentors whose hard work, achievements and
sacrifices inspire us daily. The full texture for tenor-

4LTuba—arr. Michael Barrett. This South African
t song is believed to have originated during the
difficult Apartheid years and performed as a
peaceful protest song. Tuba is translated as "a
dove," and the call and response texture makes
reference to the story of Noah and the dove that
brought an olive branch after the great flood to
signify that the worst is over. The baritone soloist
presents the initial melody while the choir builds
the harmonic structure in rhythmic excitement.
Improvised percussion and vocal ululation are
encouraged!

4L Ubi Caritas—Michael John Trotta. The beloved
t Latin text is set in an elegantly simple four-part
texture with conservative ranges. Straightforward
rhythms and moments of release create a
tapestry of sound that surrounds the solo chant
line, which may be sung by a soloist or performed
by a C instrument. Beautiful modern harmonies
and cluster chords create an artistic setting that is
equally appropriate for service use or the concert
stage. Lovely!

e exciting a cappella composition fuses musical
styles that are influenced by South African,
Hindu, and Eastern European traditions, including
drones, call-and-response phrases, repeating
