a l l l e v e l s
H Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter Blair.
This is a great old tune! Except...there's nothing
"old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing
version of a marvelous, often-played standard
that opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is
filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes are
featured on a chorus and there is a written or ad lib
solo for piano.

e Bad Dog!—Mike Dana. Here's a great opener,
closer, or anything in between! This swinging
shuffle features cool lines, surprising harmonies,
great rhythm section hooks, and much more.
Notated rhythm section parts, reasonable brass
ranges, and flexibly written or improvised solo
space make this chart a winner. Additionally, it
has a nice feel, a fine harmonic structure, and a
dynamic shout chorus. Scored for standard big
band, it's also playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentation and includes a helpful
guitar chord chart. No bad dogs here!

e Birk's Works—Dizzy Gillespie/arr. Mark Taylor.
This classic minor blues by Dizzy Gillespie is set in
a comfortable medium swing style. A small group
is featured at the top using the distinctive stylings
and articulations of the original recording. Nice and
accessible passages for the full ensemble as well
as a satisfying shout chorus are featured along with
solo space for trumpet and tenor saxophone.

Blue Avenue—Larry Neeck. With its solid,
swinging groove, tasty riffs, catchy down-home
melody and solid ensemble writing, Blue Avenue
is a great introduction to the swing style for the
youngest jazz bands. The two-measure solo
section, with suggested solos included, will
encourage young improvisers to give it a try, or it
could be omitted altogether. Playable with optional
reduced or expanded instrumentations, this one
is easy to put together, and will have your young
jazzers swinging in no time!

e Bye Bye Blackbird—Ray Henderson/arr. Rich
Sigler. This swinging chart is a great vehicle for
a tenor sax soloist with jazz band. The solo part
ranges from written melody to a written jazz solo,
all very accessible, and it especially swings when
the tenor soloist trades fours with the ensemble.
The ensemble and soloist are equally featured
throughout. The lead trumpet range is to written
G top of staff and optional parts are included for
expanded instrumentation. A great jazz standard
for developing jazz groups!

H C-Jam Blues—Duke Ellington/arr. Rick Stitzel.
Whether you know this one as C-Jam Blues or
Duke's Place, you sure will recognize all the great
Ellington writing! Even the most inexperienced
bands can do a fine performance on this jazz
classic. The suggested solos are included in the
parts for the entire section, so you can make it
a soli feature if you prefer. There's a marvelous
ensemble tutti section that starts softly then builds
to the end.

H Caravan—Duke Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney.
Everyone will recognize this Duke Ellington classic!
It was one of the featured works in the 2014 movie
"Whiplash" and uses interesting textures and
alternates between a Latin groove and swing. This
is a very effective production number with limited
technical demands for young players.

Centerpiece—Harry "Sweets" Edison/arr. Mike
Story. Wow, this is great! Mike Story has created
an ideal easy swing/shuffle chart on a great
blues melody by Sweets Edison. Centerpiece is
accessible with easy brass ranges, a medium
swing tempo of 120 bpm, along with brief written
or improvised solos for tenor sax, trumpet, and
alto sax. Well-notated rhythm section parts are
included along with optional parts for flute, clarinet
and vibes. Also playable with optional reduced
instrumentations, this great blues tune has been
recorded by all the greats and will become a staple
of your library! Highly recommended!

H Dat Dere—Bobby Timmons/arr. Erik Morales. A
soulful tune with a catchy title and melody! Erik
Morales captures composer Bobby Timmons'
medium swing groove. At a moderate tempo,
with a slightly mysterious intro, the saxes grab the
melody and it builds from there. A written (or ad lib)
alto solo is provided with a fat shout chorus. This
is an outstanding chart in every respect! Highly
recommended!

e Diggin' the New Digs (from "Incredibles
2")—Michael Giacchino/arr. Paul Murtha. From
the entertaining soundtrack of "Incredibles 2"
comes this marvelous jazz waltz that works great
for full jazz band. Baritone sax gets a rare turn in
the spotlight, followed by the brass section with
sax answers. The solo section can feature any
combination of alto sax, trumpet, or trombone with
suggested or improvised solos. A fun change of
pace and highly recommended!

He Don't Get Around Much Anymore—Ellington
& Russell/arr. Mark Taylor. One of the classic
trademark tunes from the Duke Ellington library,
this familiar jazz standard is solidly scored for
younger players by Mark Taylor. When it comes to
accessible charts in a medium swing style, this one
can't be beat! Highly recommended!
10427404 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00
e Foundation Issues—Paul Baker. This hard-
swinging 12-bar blues features acoustic bass
in a Thad Jones-inspired setting. It cooks right
along and the ensemble provides solid support
for the bass soloist. At a tempo of 140 bpm, this
chart provides a very accessible opportunity for
the unsung hero of the rhythm section to shine.
Soprano sax leads the sax section. A unique
and very cool trombone section plus bass soli is
wrapped between solos for trumpet, soprano sax
and bass before heading into the shout chorus.
Brass ranges: trumpet to written high C and
trombone to G-flat. Bass features are hard to find,
and this one is outstanding!
