Giant Steps—John Coltrane/arr. Mark Taylor.
Here's a fresh take on a traditional jazz standard.
The style is still up-tempo swing, and the saxes
maintain a fair share of the spotlight along with
ensemble hits and solo spots for drums; however,
there is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few other
meter surprises that help give this outstanding chart
a contemporary edge. Highly recommended!

H
Rhapsody in Blue—George Gershwin/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. This is a tour-de-force arrangement by
Gordon Goodwin of Gershwins's masterpiece. If you
can cut it, then play it because it will truly warrant
a standing ovation. The sax doubles call for piccolo
(alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet
(bari). The second alto part has the well-known
clarinet solo. This chart has it all...the thematic

l The Singing Oyster (Pro Edition)—Dee Barton.
This is one of the most popular charts on The Jazz
Compositions of Dee Barton recording by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra. This is the original arrangement
as recorded by Kenton. Starting lightly with
unison saxophones, the chart then adds brass
backgrounds growing in intensity and leading to a
trumpet solo followed by some of the coolest (and
most challenging) ensemble writing ever. There is
a good bit of unison line playing by everyone in the
band. The drums then bring the full band into a
shout chorus that lifts you out of your chair. There
is a return to the lighter side for a bit and then back
to the roaring shout!

Skyliner—Charlie Barnet/arr. Sammy Nestico.
After a brief "vacation" from writing, and at the age
of 94, Sammy Nestico is back! As a tribute to Charlie
Barnet's signature tune here is a stunning flag-
waver from the master himself. Sammy joined the
Charlie Barnet band on trombone in 1946, and he
specifically chose this tune to "give it a new suit of
clothes." No solos are required, but this powerhouse
chart features a workout for every section of the
band. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Soprano Sax.
