In additional to incredible ensemble writing, there is improvisation space for piano and alto saxophone. Don Sebesky. Of all the arrangements done of this iconic Strayhorn/Ellington standard, Don Sebesky's chart, written for the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra (and recorded numerous times), ranks as one of the best, most creative, and challenging versions. This compliment to the chart has been scored for standard big band instrumentation (five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass and drums.) Mike Kamuf. With a wonderful melody by the brilliant composer Billy Strayhorn, this arrangement by Mike Kamuf is superb and includes suggested or improvised solos for trumpet, tenor sax, and trombone. The trumpet 1 range is up to written high D-flat and the tempo swings at around 180 bpm. This is the show closer that will bring down the house! The main groove is a funky boogaloo at about 103 bpm, plus a band chant, a swing section, and a gospel feel. Adventures includes a rubato introduction, a Baroque bridge, a bass melody, and a huge ending, all set to a driving rock groove in 6/4, felt in two! Improvised solo space for lead alto on soprano sax includes suggested scales. Optional woodwind doubles include soprano sax on flute, alto 2 on flute, tenors 1 and 2 on clarinet, and baritone on bass clarinet. The trumpets double on flugels. This sizzlin' chart performed here by Kris Berg & The Metroplexity Big Band from the CD Perspectives was written for the South Carolina All-State Jazz Band. This arrangement utilizes many color combinations, a dark melody, and a hard-swinging Elvin Jones style. The chart has solo space for lead tenor sax and lead trombone, which leads to a powerful shout chorus before ending with a recap of the introduction.
