BLUES & SWING medium
H Haitian Fight Song—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew
Homzy. Featuring a dark intensity and a powerful
unison riff figure in minor, this medium swing chart
is a great showcase for your bass player as well
as the trombone section. The harmonic structure
is quite simple, but the depth of the arrangement
comes from the thematic layers that are continually
added throughout. Written solo (or soli) sections are
included for the trombones and trumpets as well as
notated piano voicings and bass lines. The brass
ranges are moderate and optional parts are included
for flute, clarinet and F horn. Here is an exciting
Mingus gem for your band! Highly recommended!

4 Have Bass, Will Travel—Bob Curnow. This
slow swing opens up with your bass player soloing
(written or improved) for 12 bars before the band
moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of
the theme. Give your bass player a shot at this
feature! Bass is featured throughout. Two different
bass parts are included; one with a written solo
throughout and one with just changes for the more
mature player. Moderate ranges for all makes this
a very accessible chart for most bands.

Hey Pachuco!—arr. Shane Porter. Your students
and audiences will love this burning swing tune
made famous by Royal Crown Revue. The groove
is set up with a drum solo laying down a Sing, Sing,
Sing Krupa feel before the band enters. A trumpet
with plunger solo leads into a sax soli section. Next,
the trumpet section is featured on a soli section
before a half-time feel gives the brass a chance
to shine. Returning to the original groove, a written
solo for tenor sax heightens the excitement. Finally,
there's an open drum solo before the band enters
and takes it on home. Pure excitement!

4 Hittin' at Minton's—Paul Baker. Named after the

and altos state the melody echoing Bird and Diz.
Solo space is provided for alto sax and trumpet.
A challenging shout chorus follows, leading to
the grand finale. Trumpet range is to written high
C; trombone range is to G. Give your students
experience with the language of bebop!

variety and a change of pace to any program

trumpet, it's the band that truly shines on this
outstanding chart. Additional features include
standard instrumentation with trumpets on
flugelhorns and optional vibes. A very helpful
guitar chord chart is included in the set. This is
not to be missed!

I Left My Heart in San Francisco—arr. Quincy
Jones. Quincy Jones wrote some incredible
arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count
Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By
Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in
San Francisco features great interplay between the
ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with
written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm,
and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo
space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are very
moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of bands.
It's a true classic! Highly recommended!

If I Were a Bell—Frank Loesser/arr. Sammy
Nestico. Although composed by Frank Loesser for
the musical "Guys and Dolls," this tune became
a jazz standard largely thanks to the recording
by Miles Davis. Sammy Nestico shows that
he's still the master of big band arranging with
this sparkling version in a medium swing style.
Impeccably scored utilizing every section of the
band, solo space is provided for tenor saxophone
and piano, and a beautifully crafted full ensemble
chorus finishes it out.

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)

very clever chart is all swing, but it begins as Latin
then alternates with a swing feel. The tempo is bright
at around 190-200 bpm with suggested solos for
trumpet and tenor sax, a few piano montunos, and
a big shout chorus leading to a huge ending closing
this fine chart appropriately. Additional wind parts
and a vibes part are included for optional expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

on the great Basie-Straight Ahead album of 1968
by Count Basie, this swing outing features solid
section and full ensemble writing, brass buckets,
sax scoops, drum fills, and piano in the solo role.
The tempo is not taxing with the quarter equaling
120; however, paying careful attention to dynamics
will be especially important. The rhythm section
parts are partially notated with chords cued.

Knuckleball Blues—Paul Baker. This is a medium
swing "blues with a bridge" chart that plays off
the unusual nature of a knuckleball's trajectory
and flight characteristics. Lots of fun "wobbles"
and misdirection bring this hard-swinging chart
home in the melody and orchestration. Solo space
is provided for tenor sax and trumpet with plenty
of backgrounds as well. The trumpet range is to
written High C above the staff. A full-bodied shout
chorus follows the solos before returning to the
bridge and closing tag. Swings hard!

slightly more modern groove. This is the perfect
opener for any concert or festival! The tune is based
on a 16-bar blues, features lots of ensemble for the
band, and has solo spots for any saxophone, brass

go wrong if you're featuring "The Main Attraction!"

Baylock. Here is an outstanding tenor sax
feature chart that was composed by pianist Joey
Calderazzo, recorded by the late, great Michael
Brecker and arranged by Alan Baylock. A haunting
medium swing groove- tenor sax as the melody and
the solo space, and lead trumpet range is to written
high C. A beautiful tune and superb chart on this
hard-swinging feature!

My Heart in San Francisco. There's space for a
trumpet solo, and the ensemble writing is quite
playable by most bands. This is oh, so nice and

and has been recorded countless times, making it
a must-have for any band's library as it exemplifies
wonderful roaring ensemble passages with soft,
soft sections which will make your band sparkle.
