Featuring a dark intensity and a powerful unison riff figure in minor, this medium swing chart is a great showcase for your bass player as well as the trombone section. The harmonic structure is quite simple, but the depth of the arrangement comes from the thematic layers that are continually added throughout. Written solo (or soli) sections are included for the trombones and trumpets as well as notated piano voicings and bass lines. The brass ranges are moderate and optional parts are included for flute, clarinet and F horn. Here is an exciting Mingus gem for your band! Highly recommended! 10005180 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 4 Have Bass, Will Travel—Bob Curnow. This slow swing opens up with your bass player soloing (written or improved) for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of the theme. Give your bass player a shot at this feature! Bass is featured throughout. Two different bass parts are included; one with a written solo throughout and one with just changes for the more mature player. Moderate ranges for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 11202788 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 Hey Pachuco!—arr. Shane Porter. Your students and audiences will love this burning swing tune made famous by Royal Crown Revue. The groove is set up with a drum solo laying down a Sing, Sing, Sing Krupa feel before the band enters. A trumpet with plunger solo leads into a sax soli section. Next, the trumpet section is featured on a soli section before a half-time feel gives the brass a chance to shine. Returning to the original groove, a written solo for tenor sax heightens the excitement. Finally, there's an open drum solo before the band enters and takes it on home. Pure excitement! 10050989 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 4 Hittin' at Minton's—Paul Baker. Named after the legendary Harlem nightclub where bebop was born, this medium swing chart speaks the language of bebop from the first measure to the last. Trumpets and altos state the melody echoing Bird and Diz. Solo space is provided for alto sax and trumpet. A challenging shout chorus follows, leading to the grand finale. Trumpet range is to written high C; trombone range is to G. Give your students experience with the language of bebop! 11207706 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 Honeysuckle Rose—Thomas "Fats" Waller/arr. Paul Baker. You may think this very clever chart is all swing, but it begins as Latin then alternates with a swing feel. The tempo is bright at around 190-200 bpm with suggested solos for trumpet and tenor sax, a few piano montunos, and a big shout chorus leading to a huge ending closing this fine chart appropriately. Additional wind parts and a vibes part are included for optional expanded instrumentations. Highly recommended! 10756380 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .48.00 It's Oh, So Nice—Sammy Nestico. The tempo is not taxing with the quarter equaling 120; however, paying careful attention to dynamics will be especially important. The rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. 2477338 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .52.00 Knuckleball Blues—Paul Baker. This is a medium swing "blues with a bridge" chart that plays off the unusual nature of a knuckleball's trajectory and flight characteristics. Lots of fun "wobbles" and misdirection bring this hard-swinging chart home in the melody and orchestration. Solo space is provided for tenor sax and trumpet with plenty of backgrounds as well. The trumpet range is to written High C above the staff. A full-bodied shout chorus follows the solos before returning to the bridge and closing tag. This is a terrific big band chart that belongs in every library right alongside I Can't Stop Loving You, Nice 'n Easy and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. There's space for a trumpet solo, and the ensemble writing is quite playable by most bands. This is oh, so nice and highly recommended! 10530081 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 H Moten Swing—Buster & Benny Moten/arr. Ernie Wilkins.
