Additional features include multiple tempos and feels ranging from 76 to 304 bpm, to styles including an a cappella sax soli introduction, jazz ballad with double time, shuffle, and swing sections culminating in a rubato ending. As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Count Basie's Finest Hour, Doodle Oodle is a barnburning Billy Byers original. In usual Basie fashion, this chart swings its tail off with incredible ensemble passages and provides for plenty of solo space for both tenor saxophonists to dual it out. Here's a fresh take on a traditional jazz standard. The style is still up-tempo swing, and the saxes maintain a fair share of the spotlight along with ensemble hits and solo spots for drums; however, there is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few other meter surprises that help give this outstanding chart a contemporary edge. As recorded by the Thad Jones- Mel Lewis Orchestra on their Central Park North album, this great collaboration between band member Jerome Richardson and Thad Jones has become an established standard for better bands. It's a mighty swinger with an edgy melodic line, contemporary voicings, and lots of section work that's guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet. 10754227 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .65.00 I Just Can't Wait to Be King—Elton John/arr. Gordon Goodwin. From the Disney movie "The Lion King," Gordon Goodwin has crafted a hot jazz shuffle that goes and then goes even more! A showcase for alto and trumpet with a unison melody line and solo space for each player, it includes plenty of energy, zip, attitude and a hot shout chorus section. This chart roars! Highly recommended! 10012009 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .70.00 Inner Urge—Joe Henderson/arr. Mark Taylor. Composed by jazz legend Joe Henderson, this up-tempo burner from Mark Taylor features a mesmerizing groove and masterful scoring. The rhythm section sets the groove and then a trio of tenor, guitar and vibes carries the melody, while layers of sound are gradually added creating a powerhouse effect. Solo space is included for tenor saxophone and guitar, and there are feature spots for the brass section and later the saxophones. A great chart on a great tune! 10617872 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 June Is Bustin' Out All Over—Richard Rodgers/ arr. Bill Holman. The title says it all for this cooking chart by Bill Holman, as recorded on the album Bill Holman's Great Big Band! Set in an up-tempo swing style with some alternating 3/4 and 4/4 meters, this fantastic chart has ample solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet that leads to a flourishing climatic shout chorus making it ideal for any performance! 11100471 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 Miles' Big Band Dojo—Rick Hirsch. Miles' Big Band Dojo is an up-tempo swinger bookended by rubato statements of the exotic main theme, which is derived from a pentatonic mode found in traditional Japanese music. Its exciting big band writing has memorable melodies and is a great vehicle to feature your alto and trumpet soloists. This chart was written for Miles Osland's celebration of 30 years of masterful teaching at the University of Kentucky. Rhythm section parts are notated as needed, and several alternate parts are included in the set for expanded instrumentation. Sophisticated, creative and appealing! 10999423 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 On Green Dolphin Street—Bronislau Kaper/ arr. Gordon Goodwin. Recorded and released by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band as a digital single, this chart is an homage to Oscar Peterson. It's a solo feature including separate solo parts for piano, C instruments, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet and trombone. The tempo is around 250 bpm; the lead trumpet range is to written high F. Alto sax 1 doubles soprano sax and alto sax 2 doubles flute. A tour-de-force chart! 10353484 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .70.00 Out the Window—Adam Larson. Commissioned by the jazz division of the Illinois Music Educators Association for the 2020 Illinois All-State Jazz Ensemble, this Adam Larson multidimensional swing composition provides musical challenges to all sections of the band with meter changes, saxophone soli sections, and textural scoring. In addition to the wonderful ensemble writing, the open solo section provides space for soloists to stretch out. The Count Basie Orchestra has been doing "barn burner" charts better than almost any other big band. This Billy Byers original starts out hot and never cools down. The tenor saxophone is the chosen soloist, and the full ensemble writing just keeps on keepin' on. Talk about lifting your audience out of their chairs - Wow! This one will do it. 11202780 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 H Rhapsody in Blue—George Gershwin/arr. Gordon Goodwin. This is a tour-de-force arrangement by Gordon Goodwin of Gershwins's masterpiece. If you can cut it, then play it because it will truly warrant a standing ovation. The sax doubles call for piccolo (alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet (bari). The second alto part has the well-known clarinet solo. This chart has it all...the thematic material, swing, key changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet and trombone and lead trumpet range to written high F. The percussion part calls for mallets and tympani. Overall, a grasp of both jazz and classical concepts will make this chart stand apart from anything else. Featuring a hard groovin' 12/8 feel, this John LaBarbera original serves as an alto saxophone feature that also puts the entire band through its paces. The skilled scoring makes this sound harder than it really is, making this a great choice for festivals and contests. As recorded by the John LaBarbera Big Band on Caravan. 10462700 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 The Rotten Kid—Buddy Greco/arr. Dick Grove. As recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band on the album The New One, this great arrangement is full of fire and energy. Set as an up-tempo shuffle, it's a wonderful chart to feature lots of soloists along with dynamic ensemble writing throughout. There's solo space for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and trombone, allowing each to blow as long as they would like. In addition, this tune features a saxophone soli, a short trumpet section soli (a la Dizzy), and climaxes with a great shout chorus. The Rotten Kid will be an outstanding opener or closer for any concert program! 10455882 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 4 The Send-Off—Pete McGuinness. If you've got a band full of aces, this chart is for you! You will need flugelhorns for the entire trumpet section to get the sound you want to hear. Winding lines and top-notch ensemble writing make this chart something special. It is a great chart for the more advanced big band. 11206080 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 4 A Shade of Jade—Joe Henderson/arr. Alan Baylock. This Joe Henderson jazz standard is a terrific vehicle for more advanced jazz ensembles with solo space for tenor 1 and drum set. The lead trumpet range is up to written high D. At 128 bpm, this hard-swinging chart cooks every measure. High-energy swing and first-class writing! 11198968 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .62.00 H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/arr. Gordon Goodwin. A few twists and turns added to the original Benny Goodman swing version make this chart a definite crowd and band pleaser. Gordon Goodwin's arrangement features a clarinet part and an alternate alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet. Solo changes are provided for all saxophone parts and clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is to high F-sharp. While not recorded by Goodwin's Big Phat Band, it's a staple of the band's library and is played often in live performances. It's a wonderful rendition of this big band classic! 10311471 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .70.00 l The Singing Oyster (Pro Edition)—Dee Barton. This is one of the most popular charts on The Jazz Compositions of Dee Barton recording by the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This is the original arrangement as recorded by Kenton. Starting lightly with unison saxophones, the chart then adds brass backgrounds growing in intensity and leading to a trumpet solo followed by some of the coolest (and most challenging) ensemble writing ever. There is a good bit of unison line playing by everyone in the band. The drums then bring the full band into a shout chorus that lifts you out of your chair. There is a return to the lighter side for a bit and then back to the roaring shout! 11202793 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .65.00 l The Singing Oyster (Edited Edition)—Dee Barton/ arr. Bob Curnow. This is one of the most popular charts on The Jazz Compositions of Dee Barton recording by the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After a brief "vacation" from writing, and at the age of 94, Sammy Nestico is back! As a tribute to Charlie Barnet's signature tune here is a stunning flag- waver from the master himself. Sammy joined the Charlie Barnet band on trombone in 1946, and he specifically chose this tune to "give it a new suit of clothes." No solos are required, but this powerhouse chart features a workout for every section of the band. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Soprano Sax. 10931668 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 H Spain—Chick Corea/arr. John LaBarbera. This monster arrangement is the authentic version as recorded by Bill Watrous and his Manhattan Wildlife Refuge in the mid '70s. The signature lines and blazing tempo of Chick Corea's classic are transformed into a roaring chart for big band by master arranger John LaBarbera.
