CLASSICAL
Ocean Storm (La Tempesta di Mare)—An-
tonio Vivaldi/arr. Tom Fritz. Feel the power of
"The Tempest Of The Sea" (Vivaldi) in this work
for strings. Ascending and descending passages
with much call and response depict the swells
of the storm, while reinforcing string crossings,
accidentals, and a variety of bow articulations.
First violins shift to third position.

e Polovtsian Dances—Alexander Borodin/arr.
Samuel Gelfer. These timeless melodies from
Alexander Borodin have been beautifully arranged
for strings and transposed to the friendlier key of
G major. This piece poses a challenge suitable for
advanced middle school orchestras, or a good
exercise in melodic shaping and tone production
for an intermediate high school group. Major
teaching features include triplets, syncopation,
ornaments, 16th-note rhythms, and slurs. A beau-
tiful concert selection for any time of the year.

4e Symphony No. 19 (Movement 4)—Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle.
Written by a 16-year-old Mozart, this movement
in rondo form has distinct key centers to establish
hand patterns and excellent intonation. True to
the Classical style, the energetic melody and
accompaniment figures reinforce off-the-string
bowing and develop speed and facility. Rich with
pedagogical and musical opportunities!

4 Andante Festivo—Jean Sibelius/arr. James
Richards. Originally composed for string quartet
in 1922, Andante festivo was rescored by the
composer in 1938 for string orchestra with
timpani. The work emphasizes the warmth and
rich sonority of the string orchestra, reflecting
a hymnlike ceremonial quality. Broad lyrical
phrases explore a wide range of dynamic
contrast, phrasing, bow distribution, and
orchestral color.

e Brandenburg Concerto No. 2—J.S. Bach/arr.
Todd Parrish. The harmonic beauty and seamless
polyphony of Bach's second Brandenburg
Concerto has been retained in this very true
string orchestra adaptation of the original. Wind
solos are given to principal violin, viola, and cello
players, and all sections get energetic lines and
interesting material to challenge students in their
mastery of the authentic Baroque playing style.

Manuel de Falla/arr. Douglas E. Wagner. The
arrangement from Manuel de Falla's brilliant
ballet "El amor brujo" reflects all of the tonal
color and Spanish flair of the composer's
original. Characteristic rhythms and harmonic
progressions combine with a variety of string
techniques, providing players with the makings

4e La Forza del Destino Overture—Giuseppe
Verdi/arr. Michael Hopkins. The overture to La
Forza Del Destino was composed when Italian
composer, Giuseppe Verdi, revised his opera
for a performance at La Scala in 1869. This
arrangement captures the full range of thematic
contrasts and emotion present in the original and
will be challenging and rewarding for developing
orchestras. Verdi intended the opening agitated
theme to represent fate, and this melodic them
unifies many different thematic ideas in the
overture. A musical metaphor for the force of
destiny - chaotic on the surface, yet logical and
coherent in the depth of its design.

le Maelstrom—Katie O'Hara LaBrie. A treacherous
storm motif acts as the undercurrent to quotes
from famous water-themed compositions,
including Smetana's Die Moldau, the haunting
Aquarium from Saint-Sans' "Carnival of the
Animals", and a traditional Irish sea chantey
as melodies overlap in this musical storm.
Developing players will refine articulation skills
while navigating some shifting, chromatic lines,
and a variety of rhythms in 6/8 time.
