MORE LENTEN ANTHEMS
The Mystery of God—Dan Schutte.
Contemplative and comforting, with topics such as
God's love for us, our longing for God, and eternal
life in heaven. This chant-like assembly song is
scored for SAB choir, piano, guitar, and oboe.
Liturgically, it works especially well during Lent.

Nothing But the Blood of Jesus—Robert Lowry/
arr. Craig Courtney. With artful simplicity, Craig
Courtney has recast this beloved hymn with a nod
to Appalachian hymn style. Voices, piano and solo
violin spin a delicate tapestry around the melody,
pausing for a verse as the voices sing a cappella.
The final verse with canonic layering in the vocal
lines adds momentum and a touch of greater
conviction to the message. The final phrase brings
the work to a resolved conclusion.

L O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High—
Lloyd Larson. This thoughtful Holy Week anthem
combines original material with the hymns I Stand
Amazed and O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How
High. Though the part-writing is accessible, the
rich musical textures give this anthem an intensity
that your choir and congregation will embrace. The
beautiful violin obbligato adds a wonderful touch
and is included in the octavo. Highly recommended!

Psalm 42—Heather Sorenson. A captivating
setting of Psalm 42 with text adapted by Joseph

Safe in the Arms of Jesus—Patricia Mock/arr.
Brian Buda. The great Fanny Crosby delivered the
text for this anthem, words of assurance and rest,
and Patricia Mock gave us a new melody. Brian
Buda does a masterful job providing an interesting
and uplifting accompaniment. The modulatory
shifts in this piece are especially enjoyable, moving
to unexpected plateaus with wonderfully satisfying
results. An anthem for almost any time of year.

The Sparrow's Song—Joseph M. Martin. This
troubadour-style poem tells the story of a little
sparrow who builds its nest in the crook of the
cross. The allegory is clear: the safety of Calvary
is a tower of shelter for the sinner. A simple
folk-like melody and basic harmonies combine
with accessible choral writing to lend a charming
innocence to this selection. The optional cello
obbligato adds to the beauty.

Speak to Me in Ashes—Douglas Nolan. A touch
of Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence introduces
this Ash Wednesday reflection and recurs towards
the end. The minor original melody, introduced by
optional vocal solo, captures the ebb and flow of the
lyric. Simple yet profound, this anthem is a quiet call
to listen, learn, and live.

Still Changing Me—Joshua Metzger. "Buried
in brokenness, burdened by strife, raised up in
glory, in newness of life." These words begin the
journey of this anthem, a call to repentance and
transformation. A prayerful melody rises and falls,
creating a devotional spirit. Comforting harmonic
moments provide color.

Surely He Has Borne Our Sorrows—Heather
Sorenson. One of the most poignant of all scriptures
is interpreted for today, set to music of scope and
power. The score reflects great musical contrast,
from the sweeping melody that opens the piece to
the quick articulation and energy of the B section.
The work comes to a peaceful conclusion with the
phrase, "by His stripes we all are healed." Stunning!

These Forty Days (Anthem for the Sundays of
Lent)—Lee Dengler. This special anthem allows your
choir and congregation to join together as they embark
on their own Lenten journeys. A thoughtful text, lyrical
melody, and lush harmonies provide opportunity for
good choral singing, while the piano part supports and
provides motion. An extended choral ending provides
flexibility, and an optional flute part is included.

L Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow (An
Anthem for Lent)—Lloyd Larson. This anthem,
crafted for the season of Lent, speaks of the

ultimately takes us from a place of shadows to a
place of light. The thoughtful text combines with

A Tree Once Stood—Joseph M. Martin.
Presenting the crucifixion narrative, this story-
telling anthem is written from the perspective of
the tree that became the cross. The harp-like piano
accompaniment brings a delicate simplicity to the
piece and stands in deep contrast to the sadness
of the text and the minor mode. A good balance
of unison and four-part writing makes the note
learning easy, freeing the director to cultivate an
expressive interpretation of the piece.

Turn Away from Sin (A Lenten Season Ostinato)
—Ricky Manalo. Though it is set in a gently lilting
style, this song contains a strong message of
conversion. The ostinato refrain, set for SATB choir,
can be sung quietly or hummed under the verses.
Two sets of verses, for general Lenten use (using
Psalm 51) or Eucharist (using Psalm 34), and an
optional instrumental interlude permit use in a wide
range of liturgical moments.

The Seven Last Words of Christ—Theodore Dubois/ed. Hopson.
This lenten masterpiece is a standard in choral libraries for good reason. Hal
Hopson has artfully retained all the drama and poignancy of the original using
the solo and choral parts exactly as Dubois wrote them with incidental rhythmic
alterations to accomadate the new English translation. The flexibility is derived
from the various accompaniment options. It may be effectively played with
Organ alone as found in the choral score; choral score Organ with Flute A, Harp,
and Timpani; choral score Organ with Flute B, Oboe, Harp, and Timpani; or a
Chamber Orchestra of Strings, Flutes, Oboe, Harp, Timpani and a distinctive
Organ part separate from the choral score and Conductor's score. Compelling,
performance time 45 minutes.
