Be Silent
J.B. Taylor/arr. Heather Sorenson.
Luminous and comforting, this setting of a lesser-
known Fanny Crosby text is quiet, lovely, and
reflects the text beautifully. The creative piano
accompaniment is an equal partner in the anthem
yet supports the singing without getting in the way.
This accessible, thoughtful anthem gives opportunity
to work on both musical and spiritual aspects. An
optional cello part is included.

Be Thou My Vision
arr. Charles Thatcher.
This beloved text and tune (SLANE)
are here arranged
into a moving piece for SATB voice and organ with
optional flute. The voicing and accompaniment
of each verse beautifully reflect the text, from the
simplicity of verse 1 to the rich a cappella harmonies
of verse 4, to the dance-like energy of the final verse.
This piece will make a grand and moving addition to
any service, from ordinations to general worship.

The Chorister's Prayer
Bless, O Lord
Jacob Dishman.
This anthem speaks to the heart of our calling as
church musicians. The familiar prayer "that what
we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts,
and what we believe in our hearts we may show
forth in our lives" is set to music equally deep and
meaningful, lush and lovely. This anthem of prayer
will become a classic for choirs and musicians for
years to come.

Christ Before Me
Kathleen Basi.
Based on St. Patrick's Breastplate, this setting
expresses the text with conviction and joy, sung in
full four-part harmony with flute obbligato. The briefer
verses provide harmonic contrast with a lovely, more
lyrical melody and can be sung by cantor or a section
of the choir.

Covenant Prayer
Karen Marrolli.
A memorable melody adds depth to the meaningful
text that was generated from 'seed thoughts' of the
commissioning church's choir. Homophonic in texture,
each verse builds in intensity supported by a piano
accompaniment that is of medium difficulty. "Reach
out with loving hands to accept, affirm, embrace ev'ry
child of God throughout the world" is the main theme
of this very worthwhile anthem.

Do Not Be Afraid
Bernard Sexton.
A flowing choral anthem with its verses based
on Psalms 27, 46, and 90 offers a message of
comfort and faith, especially poignant during
difficult times. The rich harmonies of the four-part
refrain are balanced with unison verses that can
be sung by a cantor or section. This makes a
wonderful instant piece for All Souls, memorial,
or general worship services.

God Gives the Song
Craig Courtney.
Music has the power to rescue us from tragedy and
fill our hearts with love: "Sing to the one who turns
our night into song." This beautifully written setting
of Susan Bentall Boersma's text is challenging but
approachable for discerning choirs, with a memorable
refrain and haunting descant. The cello provides its
own lovely commentary.

God of the Sparrow
Craig Courtney.
A gentle instrumental introduction, in which we hear
the sparrow's song (flute or violin), transports us to
a place of comfort in this setting of Jonathan Cook's
text: "God of the sparrow, sing through us songs of
deliverance, songs of peace." Opening with women's
voices on stanza one and men's voices on stanza
two, it transitions through a gentle chorus of four-part
alleluias to an impassioned plea for mercy, sung by
divisi voices. Then it gradually falls away to a final,
profound amen. An artistic choice for Lent or any
time of year.

God's Got the Whole World
Mark A. Miller.
The composer uses an adaptation of the traditional
African American spiritual text but provides new
music which is at once introspective, thankful,
and triumphant. The slow tempo allows for much
expression and emotion and is deeply moving.

Hope in Me
Terre Johnson.
Composer Terre Johnson's adaptation of Isaiah
40:21 is in the first person, so it appears as if God's
reassuring voice is speaking through the choir. Easy
SATB writing is complemented by the piano, and the
violin and clarinet alternately support and soar above
the choir. This anthem is especially appropriate for the
fifth Sunday after Epiphany, Year B.

How Can I Keep
From Singing?
Robert Lowry/arr. Matt Podd & Adam Podd.
In what has become a viral YouTube virtual choir
sensation, the Podd brothers have carefully crafted
an exceptionally artistic arrangement of this classic
song that has a contemporary vibe. A flowing
piano accompaniment anchors the setting, and the
traditional choral harmonies float above as they
effortlessly shift between triple and quadruple meter.
A stirring testament to the power of singing!

Just As I Am
arr. Howard Helvey.
A time-honored favorite comes to life in a brand
new way in this rich new arrangement of the well-
known and beloved hymn by Charlotte Elliott. It
brims with earnest dedication as it moves from the
gentle presentation of the first verse through skillful
modulations to the powerful statement of commitment
in the final verse. The full piano accompaniment
enhances both text and tonality.

Lead Me Out of the Wilderness
Brad Nix.
Reminding us that repentance is at the center of the
journey of faith, this anthem asks God to forgive,
comfort, and welcome us home. With solid choral
writing and an independent yet supportive piano
accompaniment, this piece is a prayer of deep
yearning for restored intimacy with God and offers
comfort in the midst of the wilderness of life.

John Rutter.
