L Light Shines in the Darkness—
Michael John Trotta. Cast in eight movements, this
major work draws on texts that examine the many
facets of death, the pain of transitions, and the hope
and joy of a better place. Designed to be accessible
for the choir looking to prepare a larger work within
the constraints of limited rehearsal time, this work
provides conservative ranges and straightforward
rhythms that allow time to craft a more artistic
performance. The work is scored for choir, organ
or piano, and optional string orchestra. Each of the
movements is available separately; the work as a
whole or as individual parts is recommended for
concert or liturgical service use. Movements: 1. Do
Not Stand at My Grave and Weep; 2. I Seek a Faith;
3. The Lord Is My Shepherd; 4. A Light Shines in the
Darkness; 5. Death Shall Be No More; 6. I Saw a New
Heaven; 7. Love Conquers All; 8. Gaelic Blessing
(Deep Peace).

Missa Brasileira—Jean Kleeb. The liturgical Mass
text of Missa Brasileira is set to typical Brazilian
rhythms and styles and builds a bridge between
European spiritual choral music and the rhythmic
intensity of South America. Renaissance and
Early Baroque harmonies blend with the melodies
and rhythms of Indian and Afro-Brazilian music.
In addition, popular styles such as the bossa
nova, samba and baiao are incorporated. This
work is readily accessible, and the instrumental
accompaniment can be easily adapted for a small-
group setting with choir, piano, cajon, and shaker or
for a large-group setting with piano, bass, drum set,
and Brazilian percussion. The work is rounded out
by a solo soprano and cello. Contents: Kyrie; Gloria;
Et in terra pax; Laudamus te; Gratias; Domine Deus;
Qui tollis peccata mundi; Quoniam tu solus Sanctus;
Cum sancto spiritu (Fuga); Credo; Sanctus; Osanna;
Benedictus; Agnus Dei; Dona nobis pacem.

Missa In F—Antonio Caldara/ed. Klaus Winkler.
The Venetian-born Antonio Caldara (1670-1736)
worked under Johann Joseph Fux between 1716
and 1736 as deputy court music director of the
Vienna Hofmusikkapelle (Court Music Orchestra).
An incredible 3400 compositions were penned by
him, including about 150 Mass settings. Edited here
for the first time, the Mass in F Major for four-part
mixed SATB choir, two violins and basso continuo
from the collection of the Dresden Chapel Royal
shows Caldara's great popularity far beyond national
borders. Indeed, this Mass impresses through its
successful synthesis of traditional contrapuntal style
and typical affects of that time. The editor, Klaus
Winkler, has furnished a setting for mixed choir and
organ/piano and has thus made the Mass accessible
for smaller congregations as well.

Missa Ruralis, Op. 6, No. 3—
Marianus Konigsperger/
ed. Rupert Gottfried Frieberger.
Marianus Konigsperger, who worked as a lay
brother in the Benedictine monastery of Prufening,
composed this "rural Mass" in F major to be
a melodically memorable and easily singable
Latin Mass for smaller church choirs. Individual
passages in the soprano and bass, which can also
be sung as solos, provide variety and also make
a performance with a very small setting possible.
This is a well-composed little Mass with simple
means that can complement every church service,
even today.
