More accessible than most Gordon Goodwin charts, Stay in Your Lane is a hard-hitting, good-time shuffle groove played at about 135 bpm. There's lots of call and response between sections, a swingin' shout chorus, and suggested solos are included for C, B-flat, and E-flat instruments and trombone. Of course, improvised solos are an option. An auxiliary percussion part plus optional flute and vibraphone parts are also included. This Jeff Coffin chart features a traditional blues form with a couple of odd time bars thrown in for good measure. It's a shuffle at around 166 bpm and is a feature for two tenor saxes. This is not a duel, but a vehicle to showcase both tenor players. Sample tenor solos are provided, the lead trumpet range is to written high C-sharp, there's a great sax soli and a roaring shout chorus. Optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations. This Oliver Nelson chart features alto saxophone and trumpet playing the melody. Lengthy solo sections with exciting backgrounds are featured for both those players. The band also has their turn to wail behind and after the solos. This is a standout arrangement by John Fedchock full of great sectional writing and sophisticated harmonies. Anthropology is a great Charlie Parker tune arranged by Victor Goines, and it's smokin' hot. This is packed with bop lines, section solis, a big shout chorus, solos for piano and tenor sax, and lead trumpet range to written B-flat above the staff. Anthropology is the study of humanity. You should study this chart! 10093201 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 Bemsha Swing—Thelonious Monk/arr. Bill Holman. Featuring a nice and sassy melody, this is the chart people have been wanting to see in print for years! Recorded by the Bill Holman Band on their album Brilliant Corners, this is the great Thelonious Monk tune set in a straight-eighth Latin feel. The solo space is for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano, and drums. There's wonderful ensemble writing throughout, and this Bill Holman classic is a must- have for your band. Alto 1 doubles on soprano. Exceptional Bill Holman writing at its finest! 10312472 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .65.00 Big Dipper—Thad Jones. Big Dipper was originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music; however, Basie never made the record, instead suggesting that Thad start his own band. Big Dipper still maintains that swinging Basie mindset and is an extended 16-bar blues. Its basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful rhythm section with a driving ride cymbal and crisp hi-hat underpinning saxes and brass that are tight and always on the back of the beat. 10754221 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .65.00 H Big Dipper—Thad Jones. As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on the Central Park North album, this classic swinger is a winning mix of solo with rhythm section and full band passages. The designated soloists include piano, trumpet and tenor, with the drummer taking a solo just before the final four bars. The rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. This iconic chart belongs in every mature jazz band's library! 543249 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 The Blues Machine—Sammy Nestico. First written for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1983 and later revised for the Sammy Nestico CD "This is the Moment," this great blues tune features an extended, three chorus soli for the sax section. Alto sax and piano are the designated soloists, with optional solo space also provided for guitar and trombone. The chart closes out with a very powerful shout. 10283457 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00 H Bohemian Rhapsody—Freddie Mercury/arr. Rick Hirsch. Yes, this is for real! Queen's magnum opus, in a jazz language, orchestrated for big band, with jazz solos for Trombone (also cued in Trumpet 5/ Flugelhorn) and Alto or Baritone Sax thrown in for good measure. Additional features include multiple tempos and feels ranging from 76 to 304 bpm, to styles including an a cappella sax soli introduction, jazz ballad with double time, shuffle, and swing sections culminating in a rubato ending. This is a major work for jazz ensemble at 9 to 10 minutes that students and players will want to work on. Solid saxophone parts, tempo changes, mature brass figures, and a whole lot of fun! Instrumentation: 5 Saxes (AATTB), 5 Trumpets (on Flugelhorns), 4 Trombones (3 Tenors and 1 Bass), Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums, with optional parts for Flute and Vibes. Along with Big Dipper, Don't Git Sassy is one of the most familiar charts from the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra's repertoire. Mark Taylor. Here's a fresh take on a traditional jazz standard. The style is still up-tempo swing, and the saxes maintain a fair share of the spotlight along with ensemble hits and solo spots for drums; however, there is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few other meter surprises that help give this outstanding chart a contemporary edge. As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on their Central Park North album, this great collaboration between band member Jerome Richardson and Thad Jones has become an established standard for better bands. It's a mighty swinger with an edgy melodic line, contemporary voicings, and lots of section work that's guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet. 10754227 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .65.00 I Just Can't Wait to Be King—Elton John/arr. Gordon Goodwin. From the Disney movie "The Lion King," Gordon Goodwin has crafted a hot jazz shuffle that goes and then goes even more! A showcase for alto and trumpet with a unison melody line and solo space for each player, it includes plenty of energy, zip, attitude and a hot shout chorus section. This chart roars! Composed by jazz legend Joe Henderson, this up-tempo burner from Mark Taylor features a mesmerizing groove and masterful scoring. The rhythm section sets the groove and then a trio of tenor, guitar and vibes carries the melody, while layers of sound are gradually added creating a powerhouse effect. Solo space is included for tenor saxophone and guitar, and there are feature spots for the brass section and later the saxophones. Miles' Big Band Dojo is an up-tempo swinger bookended by rubato statements of the exotic main theme, which is derived from a pentatonic mode found in traditional Japanese music. Its exciting big band writing has memorable melodies and is a great vehicle to feature your alto and trumpet soloists. This chart was written for Miles Osland's celebration of 30 years of masterful teaching at the University of Kentucky. Rhythm section parts are notated as needed, and several alternate parts are included in the set for expanded instrumentation. Recorded and released by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band as a digital single, this chart is an homage to Oscar Peterson.
