BLUES & SWING medium-advanced
Feeling Good—Bricusse & Newley/arr. Dallas
Burke. This Bricusse and Newley Broadway classic
has enjoyed immense popularity since the version
recorded by Michael Buble. This chart begins with
with an epic and swingin' full-ensemble section
reminiscent of the Buble version. There's a sultry
trumpet solo before the band cranks into an
uptempo Latin groove featuring room for soloists
and lots of inventive horn lines. The chart goes back
to the original swing style to bring the house down
for a big ending! Highly recommended!

Fitz—Gene Roland/arr. Bob Curnow. This Kenton
original from the Adventure in Blues album is a
great way to feature your top trombonist! You will

adaptation which makes the chart very playable for
most upper-level bands.

Fruitcake—Jeff Coffin/arr. David Deacon-
Joyner. This is a tune by Jeff Coffin that hearkens
the spirit and groove of the shuffle as played by
the late, great jazz drummer Art Blakey. This is a
great arrangement and has a beautifully arranged
and slightly tricky saxophone soli. Solid, fun solo
changes and a strong grooving shuffle will raise the
roof as well as the bandstand!

Giddyup!—Rick Hirsch. Better big bands will have
a great time with this chart that features a catchy,
upbeat swing groove with a hip-hop vibe. There
are idiomatic melodic and rhythmic themes in all
the horn sections which keep returning, thanks to
a uniquely modified rondo form. The improvised
solos are scored for tenor and trombone and the
brass ranges are moderate for this difficulty level.
Come on, let's go!

GMT—Michael Philip Mossman. Composed
in a relaxed swing style, this catchy tune is built
up in layers starting with the trombones. Saxes
are added followed by the trumpets, and finally
the full ensemble gets in on the fun. There are
short, flashy spots for each section followed by an
interlude leading to the open solo section. All of this
is beautifully set using an interaction between a
two-beat feel and straight-ahead swing.
