BLUES & SWING advanced
Out the Window—Adam Larson. Commissioned
by the jazz division of the Illinois Music Educators
Association for the 2020 Illinois All-State Jazz
Ensemble, this Adam Larson multidimensional
swing composition provides musical challenges
to all sections of the band with meter changes,
saxophone soli sections, and textural scoring. In
addition to the wonderful ensemble writing, the open
solo section provides space for soloists to stretch
out. A great choice for experienced ensembles!

Rabble Rouser—Billy Byers. The Count Basie
Orchestra has been doing "barn burner" charts
better than almost any other big band. This Billy
Byers original starts out hot and never cools down.
The tenor saxophone is the chosen soloist, and
the full ensemble writing just keeps on keepin' on.
Talk about lifting your audience out of their chairs -
Wow! This one will do it.

H
Rhapsody in Blue—George Gershwin/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. This is a tour-de-force arrangement by
Gordon Goodwin of Gershwins's masterpiece. If you
can cut it, then play it because it will truly warrant a
standing ovation. The sax doubles call for piccolo (alto
1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet (bari). The
second alto part has the well-known clarinet solo.
This chart has it all...the thematic material, swing,
key changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet
and trombone and lead trumpet range to written high
F. The percussion part calls for mallets and tympani.
Overall, a grasp of both jazz and classical concepts
will make this chart stand apart from anything else.
As recorded by the Big Phat Band.

The Rotten Kid—Buddy Greco/arr. Dick Grove.
As recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band on the
album The New One, this great arrangement is full
of fire and energy. Set as an up-tempo shuffle, it's
a wonderful chart to feature lots of soloists along
with dynamic ensemble writing throughout. There's
solo space for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone
and trombone, allowing each to blow as long as
they would like. In addition, this tune features a
saxophone soli, a short trumpet section soli (a la
Dizzy), and climaxes with a great shout chorus. The
Rotten Kid will be an outstanding opener or closer
for any concert program!

The Send-Off—Pete McGuinness. If you've got a
band full of aces, this chart is for you! You will need
flugelhorns for the entire trumpet section to get the
sound you want to hear. Winding lines and top-notch
ensemble writing make this chart something special.
It is a great chart for the more advanced big band.

A Shade of Jade—Joe Henderson/arr. Alan
Baylock. This Joe Henderson jazz standard is a
terrific vehicle for more advanced jazz ensembles
with solo space for tenor 1 and drum set. The lead
trumpet range is up to written high D. At 128 bpm,
this hard-swinging chart cooks every measure.
High-energy swing and first-class writing!

H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. A few twists and turns added to the
original Benny Goodman swing version make this
chart a definite crowd and band pleaser. Gordon
Goodwin's arrangement features a clarinet part
and an alternate alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet. Solo
changes are provided for all saxophone parts and
clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is to high
F-sharp. While not recorded by Goodwin's Big Phat
Band, it's a staple of the band's library and is played
often in live performances. It's a wonderful rendition
of this big band classic!

The Singing Oyster—Dee Barton. This is
one of the most popular charts on The Jazz
Compositions of Dee Barton recording by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra. This is the original arrangement
as recorded by Kenton. Starting lightly with
unison saxophones, the chart then adds brass
backgrounds growing in intensity and leading to a
trumpet solo followed by some of the coolest (and
most challenging) ensemble writing ever. There is
a good bit of unison line playing by everyone in the
band. The drums then bring the full band into a
shout chorus that lifts you out of your chair. There
is a return to the lighter side for a bit and then back
to the roaring shout!

Skyliner—Charlie Barnet/arr. Sammy Nestico.
As a tribute to Charlie Barnet's signature tune
here is a stunning flag-waver from the master
himself. Sammy joined the Charlie Barnet band on
trombone in 1946, and he specifically chose this
tune to "give it a new suit of clothes." No solos
are required, but this powerhouse chart features a
workout for every section of the band. Alto Sax 1
doubles on Soprano Sax.
10931668 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00
H Spain—Chick Corea/arr. John LaBarbera. This
monster arrangement is the authentic version
as recorded by Bill Watrous and his Manhattan
Wildlife Refuge in the mid '70s. The signature
lines and blazing tempo of Chick Corea's classic
are transformed into a roaring chart for big band
by master arranger John LaBarbera. Alto 1 doubles
flute, and alto 2 doubles soprano sax.
10052511 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .60.00
Sunset and Vine—Gordon Goodwin. As
recorded by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band,
this challenging swinger features a moderately soft

instruments, sax section solis, auxiliary percussion,
a big shout chorus, an optional flute double for alto
sax 2, and a lead trumpet range to high F sharp.
Additional sax parts are included with flute doubles.

Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Rich
DeRosa. Ever heard of Take the 'A' Train? Not like
this you haven't! Another ingenious arrangement
from the towering Rich DeRosa, this uptempo swing
chart is a journey through creative waters from
beginning to end and will not disappoint. In additional
to incredible ensemble writing, there is improvisation
space for piano and alto saxophone. As recorded by
the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band
on their album Lab 2013, DeRosa's arrangement of
Take the 'A' Train is a must for any serious band.

Take the "A" Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Don
Sebesky. Of all the arrangements done of this
iconic Strayhorn/Ellington standard, Don Sebesky's
chart, written for the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra
(and recorded numerous times), ranks as one of
the best, most creative, and challenging versions.
This compliment to the chart has been scored
for standard big band instrumentation (five
saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, piano,
bass and drums.) This one really moves, and it will
move your band and audiences!

That's a Plenty—Lew Pollack/arr. Les Hooper.
Based on Lew Pollack's Dixieland composition

energy and variety to any concert program!

Upper Manhattan Medical Group (UMMG)—
Billy Strayhorn/arr. Mike Kamuf. With a wonderful
melody by the brilliant composer Billy Strayhorn, this
arrangement by Mike Kamuf is superb and includes
suggested or improvised solos for trumpet, tenor sax,
and trombone. The trumpet 1 range is up to written
high D-flat and the tempo swings at around 180 bpm.
Section solis, big ensembles, and a fine shout chorus
all contribute to making this an outstanding chart!

H
What You Dealin' With?—Wycliffe Gordon. This
is the show closer that will bring down the house!
The main groove is a funky boogaloo at about 103
bpm, plus a band chant, a swing section, and a
gospel feel. Flexible solo space with written solos
is provided for trombone 1, alto, tenor, and trumpet
2, and the lead trumpet range is to high C. Hey,
there's something here for everyone!
