Mike Tomaro. From Stevie Wonder's acclaimed 1973 album Innervisions, this infectious funk tune has been covered by a variety of artists over the years and found its way into several movies. Here's something you don't often find! If you want to play Gordon Goodwin charts but find they are a little too challenging, check this out! Composed and arranged by Gordon Goodwin specifically for middle or high school level, this funky chart is totally hot! The lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff, there are suggested or improvised solos for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet and trombone along with backgrounds on cue. This chart is very playable by a good middle school or a high school jazz ensemble. It's the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band sound, but accessible for your band. Play it now! Ever since the widespread popularity of the Jeff Jarvis funk original Critical Mass, requests for a sequel have been pouring in. At last, Jeff has composed and arranged Honk, with all the characteristics that made its predecessor such a hit with jazz ensembles, only at a slightly more accessible level. Like Critical Mass, Honk begins with a cool sax section introduction, clearly placing your baritone saxophonist in the limelight, but without excessive technical demands. Everyone has interesting and challenging parts to play throughout and the modulation near the end gives it an extra, added lift. The solos are open and the backgrounds can be varied by instrumentation. This one is hot from beginning to end! From the Trombone Shorty CD Backatown, this tune features the powerful underlying pulse of a New Orleans second line feel along with elements of contemporary rock. There's written or improvised solo space for trumpet. In this exciting chart, the ensemble alternately screams with the full band riffs, then settles into a simmering rhythmic groove. Also included are written bass lines and piano voicings. A real treat to perform and hear! 10490297 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 I Got You (I Feel Good)—James Brown/arr. Allen Gray. This iconic hit from the great James Brown should be a staple in every jazz band's library! With funky horn licks and a driving groove in the rhythm section, this tune gets off to a rousing start. The solo section features a written or ad-libbed alto sax solo or improvised solos for tenor sax, trumpet or trombone. Optional parts are included for expanded instrumentation. From the Pixar hit animated movie, here's a high-energy and entertaining chart that captures the essence of the soundtrack perfectly, with three themes from the movie that offer a ton of variety and entertainment! A middle section in a jazz waltz style is framed by exciting rock styles that will be appealing to both audiences and developing players. The lead trumpet range is only to written F-sharp top line. There are written solo spaces for tenor sax and piano, wonderful voicings and moving lines. This is a joyous chart from top to bottom. One of the first tunes to put the group Chicago on the map was this early rocker from 1970. John Wasson stays true to the original in this outstanding version for jazz ensemble that features solos for alto sax, guitar, and all the signature horn licks. The alto soloist faces their "moment of truth" in this uplifting and funky feature that provides the soloist a chance to really show off their flair and energy. Starting with a fun yet relaxed opening, it isn't long before the chart leads into a punchy bridge section featuring the whole band. There is a brief respite before the soloist takes an extended improvised solo and we begin to hear the ensemble develop. The band continues to build with the soloist and finally tears into a simple but powerful band shout section that lets the drummer really let loose! The chart concludes as the soloist finally returns to the original melody before ending their own moment of truth with a musical sigh of relief in the final bars! Great trombone writing. Originally recorded by jazz fusion masters, The Rippingtons, this chart for jazz ensemble features a great "Birdland-like" groove and Gordon Goodwin's creativity and total command of the big band idiom. The music of Motown continues to stand the test of time with catchy melodies and well-constructed songs. There is a cool vibe in this approachable yet genuine outing in straight eighth-note fusion style. Layers are added to layers for a calculated build-up to a gritty ensemble punch. Every section and part gets the melody at some point, with solo space for tenor sax. A note-for-note transcription of the recorded solo is provided. Top trumpet note: F-sharp 5. Mark Taylor. From jazz great Freddie Hubbard, here is one of his most famous tunes in a solidly written chart by Mark Taylor. A gem of a chart, here's Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay arranged for developing jazz bands. Characteristically, it's a straight-eighths groove at 132 bpm with written or ad lib solos for tenor sax and trumpet 2. A more subtle and quieter interlude adds variety and interest, and a unique and effective rhythm section break featuring the bassist leads to the return of the head. The trumpet 1 range is to written G on top of the staff and a nice shout chorus further adds to the fun. Playable with optional expanded instrumentations. A great jazz standard superbly arranged! 10513883 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .48.00 Road Song—Wes Montgomery/arr. Alan Baylock. The groove is funky rock in this chart on the signature Wes Montgomery tune. At about 140 bpm, the solos are suggested and written for guitar and for any C, B-flat, E-flat, or bass clef instrument for flexibility. The solo section can easily be opened up to include as many soloists as desired. The ensemble gets plenty of exposure as well, both behind the soloists and as a featured partner. Featuring a distinctive upbeat groove in 7/4 throughout (3+4), this inventive original is a fabulous duet feature for trumpet and tenor sax. In between the duet statements and solos are full ensemble passages adding a nice variety and pacing to this creative piece. 11208472 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 Sidewinder—Lee Morgan/arr. Mark Taylor. One of the early and soulful jazz/rock tunes, Lee Morgan's Sidewinder features a distinctive groove and funky, riff-like phrases. In this arrangement for little big band, a trio of trumpet, tenor and guitar state the head in the beginning joined later by the rest of the ensemble. Suggested solos are included for trumpet, tenor and drums along with chord/ scale sheets in all keys. Instrumentation: 3 Saxes; 2 Trumpets; 1 Trombone plus Rhythm Section. In 1977 Stevie Wonder was in his prime and Sir Duke was on top of the charts. Michael Philip Mossman takes this familiar hit and adds his own unique touch. The opening features the brass with sax section fills. The middle section goes into a double-time swing and includes a solo for tenor sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum break. All the familiar lines from the original are there too! Suggested solos are included along with scale/ chord sheets in all keys. Highly recommended! 10297508 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .50.00 Six of One—Paul Baker. Six of One is a hypnotic straight-eighth jazz waltz in the style of guitarist Pat Metheny that adds additional colors with soprano sax and flugelhorns. Creative counterpoint, part independence, and dynamic contrast create an evolving texture that constantly captures the ear. The solo space is reserved for trumpet, guitar and drums.
