Beyond the Horizon—Bud Woodruff. A feeling of
adventure and new beginnings is conveyed in this
lively original work that is written in the style of a
reel. Young players will have the opportunity to be
introduced to cut time as well as reinforce spiccato
and legato bowing. Violin 2 and viola are doubled

Blue-Fire Fiddler—Soon Hee Newbold. This
kickin' fiddle tune is energetic, exciting and fun. The
fast and furious fiddling sounds much harder than it
really is. Riffs, finger patterns and bowings are very
idiomatic and lend themselves to fast playing. This
is sure to be the hit of the concert!

Blue Rhythmico—Kirt N. Mosier. Like the title
implies, there's a powerful rhythm and some jazzy
blue notes, nothing subtle here! This original uses
guitar-like riffs and a driving ostinato bass line in the
low strings to build up to a powerful sound.

homage to the Blue Ridge Mountains is fully
adaptable for flexible string orchestra and will be an
instant hit! Written in the style of an Irish reel, this
work reflects the influences of bluegrass and even
New Orleans march style. The fusion culminates
in a spirited groove for your orchestra. Get out the
washboards and spoons and prepare to have a
great time!

l Broken Runes—Doug Spata. A fun and engaging
piece for the upper beginning string orchestra.
Driving staccato eighth notes along with successive
down-bows at the frog create a bold and intense
atmosphere. Easy rhythms and ranges make this a
very accessible yet educationally sound work.

Carpe Diem—Richard Meyer. Full of energy
and excitement, this overture makes the perfect
concert opener or closer. Tuneful melodies and
shifting moods explore a wide variety of string
playing techniques, while the colorful orchestration
gives every section a chance in the spotlight.
This A B A work opens with a high-spirited main
theme followed by a more lyrical second theme.
The contrasting middle section is a tender lullaby
introduced first by solo violin, and then taken
up with great emotion by the entire ensemble.
The opening section returns, refreshingly re-
orchestrated for added interest. The piece ends
in a flurry of excitement. Playable by middle-
level groups but definitely mature enough for the
advanced string orchestra.

Conquistador—Deborah Baker Monday.
A dramatic work with a hint of romance,
Conquistador! depicts the life and adventures
of the Spanish explorers. Rhythmic motives in A
minor provide a glimpse into life on the trail, and
the softer, lyrical section depicts a quiet night under
the stars. It's a great way to bring history into the
music rehearsal!

and interesting work is divided into three sections.
It begins with a catchy, "spy-sounding" opening
theme, which is contrasted with an emotional
slower section, and ends with an exciting 6/8 time

Creatures—Brian Balmages. It's great for
year-round use, but would be especially scary at
Halloween. The composer describes it as "a dark
and sinister night full of strange happenings and
ghoulish encounters." Opening with a menacing
march as creatures emerge from the darkness,
dissonances soon appear in upper strings,
including the chance to play any pitch in the chaos!
Finally the audience hears footsteps in retreat from
the coming dawn.
