l Rays of Hope—Sandra Eithun. Throughout
all of life's trials, hope gives us the strength
to rebuild and confidently reinvent our
circumstances. This original piece depicts the
remnants of a storm that has passed, and then
gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures
imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle
section reminds the listener that uncluttered
days are never a given or soon forgotten.
Hope does return with the theme to round
out the ending of the piece. Techniques such
as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets,
thumb damp, and LV are incorporated. The
texture of the piece is further enhanced by the
addition of chime tree, ocean drum and/or rain
sticks, and optional handchimes, all combining
to add interest.

l Refuge—Freeman Lewis & Daniel Teasley/
arr. Michael Glasgow. A bluegrass toe-
tapper! Commissioned for the 2020 Handbell
Musicians of America Area 5 Spring Festival
in Louisville, Kentucky, this piece starts open
and stately before launching with rhythmic
energy into a fun concert piece with country
style. It brilliantly pairs the Freeman Lewis
hymn tune BOURBON (I Take My Refuge in
the Lord) with a Daniel Teasley hymn,
I'VE
FOUND A REFUGE.
Marts, mallets, plucks, ring-
touches and more are sure to excite your
concert audiences and congregations alike.
The optional band (fiddle, tambourine, bass,
and guitar/mandolin/banjo) may be added in
any combination for extra charm!

Rejoice, the Lord Is King—Patricia Hurlbutt.
For use on Christ the King Sunday, Easter, or
any general service, this festive arrangement
of
DARWALL'S 148TH is as much fun to ring as
it is to hear! Joyous arpeggios give way to a
chordal treatment of the theme, complete with
bold and unexpected harmonies. A key change
ushers in a verse underscored by delicate
martellatos before a verse on the chimes is
accompanied by peals and arpeggios in the
treble bells. A final exuberant flourish ends
the piece on a triumphant note. With optional
C4-A5 handchimes, this piece is perfect for
any celebratory moment in concert or worship.

Remembering—John A. Behnke. An original
piece to remember those who have passed
away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this
reflective piece has minimal bell changes and
no sharing of bells. The music begins with
a tolling bell, then a melody emerges which
seeks to express the significance of each life
lived, including their struggle with this virus.
Use for All Saints or for a memorial Sunday.

The Sower/Johnny Appleseed—Kathleen
Wissinger. Useful for both school and church,
this lively, original composition depicts
someone taking a lighthearted walk, scattering
seeds along the way. Mallets and thumb
damps set the tone for this airy and optimistic
piece. While in 4/4 meter, a few easy 5/4 and
6/4 measures (allowing time for the walker to
go around a rock) make this a good learning
piece to introduce mixed meter. The optional
woodblock/tic-toc block adds even more
spunk. Fun and festive!

l There is a Happy Land—Mitchell Eithun.
This simple folk hymn is given a creative
setting that uses a variety of techniques as
well as changes in tempo and dynamics. While
all quarter and half notes, the cut time meter
with some syncopation makes the piece a little
trickier than the level might indicate, but it is
worth the time. Optional percussion makes this
a lively arrangement that is as fun to hear as it
is to play.

a few rhythmic challenges in the final
section, making this a learning piece for

aptly describe this original work which vividly
depicts water flowing in a stream. A Level

ringing and to increase their understanding
of LV patterns. For handbells or handchimes,
this selection will enhance any worship
