t Om Ingen pa Jorden Vill Ha Dig—Stefan
Nilsson/arr. Olov Helge. This is a lovingly arranged
piece whose lyrics (in Swedish) assure listeners
that God will love and accept them whoever they
are. The warm harmonies will wrap your audience
in a blanket of acceptance.

On a Winter Night—Dale Warland. The second
of three pieces based on Sara Teasdale poems
from the larger work "Evening Stars," this was
originally conceived for a tenor-bass ensemble
and chorus but can be performed with double
tenor-bass chorus as well.

t One of These Days—Sarah Quartel. Setting
words by the composer, this is an affirmatory
piece with pop-inspired rhythms and harmonies.
The scat syllables and repeating patterns of the
lower parts provide a rich cushion for the lilting
melody of the soprano lines, with lyrics that
encourage us to seize the day!

t
Only Gratitude Remains—Jocelyn Hagen. The
text of this composition comes out of a family
crisis, and the words of the author, "We found
that in a storm of uncertainty, gratitude became
our anchor" have an inspiring message. The
moving text is set in a reflective and calming style
with beautiful cluster harmonies.

t The Parting Glass—arr. Joshua Pacey. This is
a gently flowing arrangement of the traditional
Scottish folk song with Irish influences. Beautifully
arranged with soprano and tenor solos, this piece
from VOCES8 features close harmonies and a
warm texture.

t
Pax Domine—David Lantz III. This challenging
a cappella anthem uses Latin phrases to convey
the theme of peace. A short section in English,
"Lord, grant us peace", gives way to a return of
the opening text, "Pax, Domine". Appropriate for
general use, memorials, Holy Week, and as a
prayer response, its lush harmonies and effective
voice leading also make it highly suitable for
concert performance.

Peace Is Every Step—David V. Montoya. This
meditative setting of Thich Naht Hahn's poem
resonates with the same quiet, ecstatic joy of the
original text. The vocal lines alternate between
layered polyphonic entrances and swelling
homophony, depicting our individual spiritual
journeys as they cyclically converge and split
again. Sitting in the space between sacred and
secular, this piece can be programmed equally in
a concert setting or religious service of almost any
denomination.

D Pine Needles—Kevin Padworski. A colorful
and evocative piano accompaniment underpins
the setting of this beautiful late Romantic text.
Built on a pentatonic melody that gives it an
earthy sound, this arrangement evokes the spirit
of its lyrics.

D
Prayer of the Children—Kurt Bestor/arr. Mark
Hayes. This moving anthem of hope, embraced
by choirs around the world for many years, is now
available in this new arrangement with piano or
orchestra accompaniment. Lush choral writing
and an inspired instrumentation treat the work
with due reverence and respect. At the very end,
two measures sung in Croatian remind us that
the prayer is intended for the whole world. Highly
recommended!

t A Prayer—Ken Burton. Featuring a bittersweet
text filled with hope and sadness by Paul
Laurence Dunbar, the Black American son of
emancipated slaves, this arrangement draws
on spiritual, gospel, and blues styles to create a
warm mixture of tonalities that will envelop you in
a blanket of sound.

t Pyramid Song—arr. Geoff Lawson. Sublime and
otherworldly, this arrangement of the iconic song
by Radiohead holds true to the original. Flowing
and mysterious, tranquil yet pensive, this concert
piece from VOCES8 is both simple and complex
- and endlessly fascinating.

t The Radium Girl—Michael Bussewitz-Quarm.
Based on the tragic story of the "Radium Girls"
- young women who were exposed to radium
as part of their work in clock factories who
eventually died from the exposure. This piece is
intended to shine a light on these women and
other people working in tragic conditions through
the power of song. Unique overtone singing and
interesting musical textures express the text in a
creative way.

Refuge—Sarah Quartel. Based on a Sara
Teasdale poem, this piece uses musical
structure to complement the poem's narrative as
expressed by rich harmonies and soaring melodic
lines. The piano underpins the chantlike melody
with continuous motion and provides characterful
harmonic moments.

t Rest—Remel Derrick. This work will be a nice
challenge for tenor-bass choirs. With a Biblical
text about finding unrivaled rest, it has a pretty
choral texture with some chant-like lines and close
cluster harmonies that round out this quiet piece.
11347949 TTBB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.60
t The River Sprite—J.C.D. Parker/ed. David
P. Devenney. A beautiful choral piece from the
American Romantic Choral Series. The river flows
and turns gently, beckoning us to see the music of
its journey and appreciate its beauty. Nineteenth-
century artistry at its best, this romantic motet is
an aural gem for any concert.

t The Sea Hath Its Pearls—J.C.D. Parker/
ed. David P. Devenney. A beautiful piece from
the American Romantic Choral Series. Parker's
settings of American poetry demonstrate his
programmatic skills, reminiscent of similar works
by Mendelssohn and Schubert. This piece, in 6/8
meter, also has the lilting feel of a sea shanty and
will make for an enjoyable concert experience.

See Amid the Winter's Snow—Becky
McGlade. This setting of Edward Caswall's well-
known text shows all the hallmarks of McGlade's
characteristic style, with changing time signatures,
beguiling chromaticism, and a beautiful, fluid
original melody. Changing meters give the sense
of fluidity, while a scintillating climax on "Peace on
earth" forms the center of the work.

September Sun—David Conte. This selection
was written to reflect upon the horrific events
of September 11, 2001. The piece consists of
four movements, with the first and last being
instrumental and the poignant poem of John
Stirling Walker serving as the text of the middle
movements. The work is reflective, giving space
for the listener to think and absorb the richness of
the text and music.

the world around us.

t
Spirit of God—Fred Gramann. This musical
setting employs changing meters to emphasize
the inherent rhythm of the lyrics. The opening
solo flows as if a cantor might perform it, slightly
lingering on important words and relaxing the
tempo at the ends of phrases. This is a peaceful,
free-flowing arrangement that allows for individual
interpretation.
