LATIN SELECTIONS medium
Coconut Champagne—Denis DiBlasio/arr. Victor
Lopez. Victor Lopez' arrangement of this great tune
by Denis DiBlasio is a more accessible version than
the original. At a medium grade level with an upbeat
samba groove, everybody gets some action with the
classic Maynard Ferguson trumpet solo harmonized
for the trumpet section in a playable range. There
is a sax section soli that can also be a solo for bari
sax or any saxophone. An optional percussion part
will complete the package. You'll dig this chart...it
soars, it excites!

Danza del Carcayu—Kris Berg. This chart is
a burning, high-energy samba that will bring
the house down at festivals and concerts. The
excitement makes it perfect as an opener or closer.
Solo space is provided for alto sax, tenor sax, or
vibes and then trumpet or trombone. Later, exciting
ensemble trades feature your drummer. Fast paced
and exciting, this will be a sure crowd pleaser!

El Tigre—Jeff Jarvis. El Tigre is composed in
the songo style, which is frequently heard in salsa
music. Syncopated figures are carefully notated
in the rhythm parts to ensure authenticity and to
support the horn lines. The memorable melodies
and sturdy harmonies are supported by the active
rhythm section. This engaging chart will be a
unique addition to any concert or festival program.

Feels So Good—Chuck Mangione/arr. Victor
Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to the
pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic
did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the
1st trumpet part is featured throughout with the
distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib
solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo
range is up to an optional written high C, but the
solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well. Victor's
arrangement brings this contemporary gem within
the range of the developing trumpet player without
losing any of the hip appeal of the original. Here's
a perennially appealing, samba/rock chart that will
provide outstanding performance opportunities for
your band and soloist! Highly recommended!

and the ensemble writing for the winds is world-
class. If you want to push your group, this chart will
be well worth the effort.

from "The Jungle Book," and with lots of tutti writing,
your band will get a real powerhouse sound!

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)
—Duke Ellington/arr. Ralph Ford. You may think
this very clever chart is all swing, but it begins as
Latin then alternates with a swing feel. The tempo is
bright at around 190-200 bpm with suggested solos
for trumpet and tenor sax, a few piano montunos,
and a big shout chorus leading to a huge ending
closing this fine chart appropriately. Additional wind
parts and a vibes part are included for optional
expanded instrumentations. Highly recommended!

La Virgen de la Macarena—Bernardino Bautiste
Monterde/arr. Chris Sharp. Rafael Mendez's
trumpet extravaganza gets the Stan Kenton
treatment in a romping Latin epic. This will give
your trumpet section an opportunity to shine
while featuring your lead player. There's an alto
saxophone solo, and your rhythm section will find
this a fun challenge. This is the perfect way to bring
the house down at the end of your concert!

Mambo Over the Mountain—Rick Hirsch.
This catchy mambo is built almost entirely on the
rhythmic figure clapped in the first two bars. Its
authentic mambo flavor is a blast to play. After
two bars of hand claps, it's winds only, then the
rhythm section is layered in. Nice combinations
of instrumental textures keep things interesting
throughout. The solos can be opened up for as many
players as desired, there are optional parts included
for expanded instrumentations, and don't miss the
highly effective drum/percussion-only interlude near
the end! This is a great chart with a lot of substance.

arrangement of one of his best-known compositions
really sizzles for jazz ensemble.

Manteca—Dizzy Gillespie/arr. Mike Tomaro. One
of the earliest examples of Afro-Cuban elements
into jazz, Dizzy Gillespie's classic composition is
updated here in a little big band format (3 saxes,
2 trumpets, trombone and rhythm section). Based
on Tomaro's popular big band chart, some new
material has been added just for fun! Optional
additional parts are included for alto, tenor and
trombone. This is one you will not want to miss!

Mission Trail—Gene Roland/arr. Bob Curnow.
You will find this Stan Kenton Orchestra piece a lot
easier and fun to play thanks to this new edition of
the chart. The instrumentation has been changed
to standard big band, and the demands for extreme
high trumpet playing have been altered. The
original of this great Latin chart was recorded on
Viva Kenton. This is a laid-back, moderate-tempo
tune that brings you the best of Kenton and Roland.
You'll love it!

Mofongo de Mama—Michael Philip Mossman.
"Mofongo" is a popular Puerto Rican menu item,
and mama's version must be a particularly spicy
dish! Set in a moderate mambo style, this catchy
tune cruises along with feature spots for the brass
and alto saxes. Solo space is provided for any
combination of alto, tenor or trumpet, and a short
montuno section sets up the sizzling full ensemble
chorus. Spicy, indeed!

America, the Beautiful—Samuel A. Ward/arr. Chris Sharp.
Here is the familiar America, the Beautiful reimagined as an energetic shuffle.
An a cappella sax soli chorale introduction gives way to a driving shuffle that
continues for the remainder of the chart. Harmon-muted trumpets provide
extra color in spots. The ranges and rhythmic responsibilities are moderate,
and there's written or improvised solo space for tenor sax. This arrangement is
appropriate for civic events, patriotic celebrations or as an interesting change-up
for festival/adjudication program. This one is really nice!

American Patrol—arr. Mike Lewis.
Glenn Miller's band made this a huge World War II hit song and here it is
scored for young players. This chart has no individual solos, very modest
brass ranges and plenty of ensemble sound. Easy to rehearse and perform,
it swings right along and is playable with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentation. A winner!

songs in stirring arrangements useful for a variety of performance needs. Titles

The Star Spangled Banner—arr. Paul Clark.
Although this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands, this arrangement
works so well it can appropriately be included in any jazz concert. It's also
invaluable to have in the files for those "emergency" situations where a jazz
group is called upon to perform our National Anthem. It includes just the right
elements to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and reverence of
the original. While it is harmonically jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can
serve as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also playable with reduced
instrumentation. If your jazz ensemble plays for basketball games, this is perfect.
A wise investment for all jazz programs! Highly recommended!
