The Word Was God—Rosephanye Powell.
What an impact this august anthem will
have on both choir and listeners! Its rhythmic
structure develops from the superb interplay
between the voices, and the layering of sound
upon sound creates a musical tapestry. Written
in an almost spiritual style, but definitely not a
spiritual, this will make a stunning choice for
larger church choirs!

Deft strokes of Celtic styling within the melody
weaves throughout the vocal texture. Gradually
building in intensity, it transitions into the final
stanza with a burst of light, aided by a key

Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life—
Thomas Keesecker. George Herbert's timeless
text is reimagined in this lovely setting
featuring beautiful choral writing that varies by
stanza: women in the first verse, men in the
second, and all in the third. The flowing piano
accompaniment propels the voices forward as
they build to a warm close: "Such a heart as joys
in love." This is very accessible and rewarding.

Density of Light—Sarah Quartel. For SATB
(with divisions) and organ, Density of light is
an anthem that sets an evocative hymn by
Thomas Troeger. The text is drawn from an
Epiphany reading and explores the theme of
the triumphing of light over darkness. The
organ opens with a rising and falling quaver
motif that is taken and expanded upon in
the vocal lines. Expanding into dramatic
homophonic textures, the piece ends with the
words 'glory be to you O God' sung to powerful
fortissimo chords.

Divine Encounter: I. The Invitation—
Craig Courtney. The first movement of the
trilogy Divine Encounter is a song in which
God invites us to receive His bounty. The
first verse of Isaiah 55 is expressed as a
celebration rather than the meditative, lyric
manner found in most settings. In contrast,
the setting of the sixth verse is regal,
earnest, and authoritative; the architecture
of the movement is built upon the contrast
between these two styles.

Courtney. The second movement of the trilogy

God and people alike.

Divine Encounter: III. The Blessing—
Craig Courtney. The third movement of the
trilogy Divine Encounter is a newly composed
benediction based on the traditional text
from Numbers 6:24-26. As Jesus blessed
and multiplied the fish and bread, so God
blesses the offering we bring to Him. The
melody, which is one huge arc, is stated
twice, creating a simple, sincere message of
peace and rest.

Even When God Is Silent—Robert Farrell.
This choral anthem sets to music the moving
words believed to have been inscribed on a
wall in Germany during the Holocaust. The
use of trumpet adds to the haunting nature
of this setting which is both bold yet crafted
with sensitivity. Some chromatic passages and
the wide range of dynamics will benefit from
careful rehearsal.
