LITURGICAL ANTHEMS
Exsultate! Jubilate!—Kyle Pederson. This
unique setting pairs the iconic Latin text with
a new, original English text which responds
to the question: Why do we rejoice and shout
our praises to God? The music captures the
energy, rhythm, and exuberance inherent in
the phrases "exsultate Deo" and "jubilate
Deo," but also reflects the quiet joys found
in gratitude for the daily gifts of breath and
light. The piano accompaniment is rhythmic
and lively.

From Generation to Generation—Tom
Trenney. This large-scale anthem creatively
adapts the text O God, Our Help in Ages
Past and pairs it with exciting original music
that incorporates fragments of the tune
ST.
ANNE. A soaring melodic refrain provides the
foundation of the anthem that speaks of God's
constancy in our lives. Scored for both piano
accompaniment and separately for oboe, flute,
string quartet, and organ.

Gloria Patri (from "Magnificat" D. 486)
—Franz Schubert/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen.
Beginning with joyous acclamations, this
exuberant piece features a polyphonic
middle section followed by a lyrical
presentation of the "amens" and the return
of the homophonic style in the closing
declamatory statements. This arrangement
provides developing choirs with a solid
introduction to a classical style of singing.

God of Justice, Love and Mercy—Edwin
M. Willmington. This anthem is prayer for
God's justice to live out as a part of our lives,
both personally and throughout our culture.
With optional orchestration, this new hymn
setting will fit many places in a worship
service structure, from opening to closing.
The new tune can also be readily learned by
a congregation, or the text may be sung with
other tunes in compatible meter.

God With Me—Sarah Quartel. This anthem
is a beautiful and meditative setting of a
translated text from Carmina Gadelica, a
collection of Gaelic hymns, prayers, and other
texts. With gentle suspensions and exquisite
harmonies, this anthem is warm, refreshing,
and uplifting, perfectly demonstrating Quartel's
signature style.

I Sought the Lord—Karen Marrolli. Karen
Marrolli provides an original melody for a
text first published anonymously in London
in 1878. Set in four parts with a fair amount
of unison singing, the almost folk-like tune
is singable and satisfying. The text speaks of
God's unending love that reaches for us even
as we think we are the ones reaching out.

If God Is for Us—Bob Moore. Based upon
a cherished passage from Romans 8, this is
composed in a verse-refrain format that allows
for flexibility of performance: cantor or soloist,
choir, or assembly. The result is a nicely varied
vocal texture that sails above piano and optional
flute (or C instrument) accompaniment.

In My Father's House—Philip W.J. Stopford.
Here is an absolutely gorgeous original, for choir
with organ or optional orchestration. A simple,
expressive setting of John 14, it conveys the
peace and comfort inherent in the well-known
text, matched with flowing melodies and gentle
accompaniment. This is a very moving, very
beautiful work, deeply meaningful for all who
hear it. Highly recommended!

Let Us Love One Another—Mark Sirett.
Appropriate for any lectionary day about
love, Mark Sirett's setting of this well-known
text from John features beautiful, lyrical part-
writing and a flowing accompaniment. This
anthem connects God's love for us as the
reason and cause for our striving to love one
another. Beautiful and thought provoking.

Light of Christ, Burn Bright—Orin Johnson.
With a wide-ranging topical scope - care
of the sick, church, comfort, healing, light,
love for others, praise, Christian life, and the
resurrection - this anthem will be appropriate
for many liturgical moments. It is set in 5/4, but
the regularity of the rhythmic pattern (always
3/4+2/4) should not pose a challenge to most
choirs. In addition to the fully scored version
for SAB choir, keyboard, guitar, and obbligato
solo instrument, a simplified hymn version is
included in this octavo.

Like the Colors of the Rainbow—Philip
W. J. Stopford. This anthem speaks to the
history and diversity of congregational life
as God's people join in worship. The organ-
accompanied voices enjoy occasional brief a
cappella moments, and recurring alleluias lift
the voices in praise: "Every moment spent in
praising has its source and end in You."

Listen to the Silence—David Lantz III.
Loosely based on I Kings 19:12, the text
expands into the broader idea that we all need
to listen to the silence for the still, small voice
calling out to us. If your choir is up for a bit
of a challenge, try this setting featuring very
smooth voice-leading and harmonies. Ideal for
Lent or any time of reflection or prayer.

Look with Eyes That See Forever—Jeffrey
Blersch. The text was inspired by the parable
of the dishonest manager (Luke 16:113) and
will help Christians wrestle with the concepts
of living in a broken world to make an eternal
difference. The music presents a warm
melodic setting of the text, and each choral
part gets to sing the melody.

The Lord Is a Mighty God—Felix
Mendelssohn/arr. Michael Burkhardt.
Appropriate for Christ the King Sunday or
general use, this Mendelssohn classic has
been arranged for choirs with smaller voicings.
Lush harmonies in Romantic style, this anthem
is based on Psalm 95:3-4, with an alternate
text based on Jeremiah 23:4-6.

Love Divine—James Biery. "Love divine, all
loves excelling" - Charles Wesley's immortal
text receives an elegant musical treatment
scored for SATB voices and organ. From a
tranquil opening, the piece flows seamlessly
through increasingly majestic verses supported
by the organ before drawing to a quiet close.

Lux Aeterna Domine—Patti Drennan. Using
the traditional Latin text from the Requiem
Mass, this original setting of the symbolic
prayer for light is a beautiful journey for mixed
divisi choirs. The a cappella texture opens
with a hushed quality and layers of closer
harmonies before traveling through a more
adventurous section that builds in dynamics
and intensity.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God—arr.
Kyle Pederson. This arrangement is a true
reimagining of Martin Luther's iconic hymn
melody. New harmonies and ambient electric
guitar accompaniment create an ancient/
modern feel, giving new life to this classic
hymn. A piano-only accompaniment part is
available should you want to program this with
just the piano accompaniment.

The Music of Living—Dan Forrest. This
powerful and inspirational piece with a
dynamic piano accompaniment was composed
for a performance at the 2011 Texas Music
Educators Association Convention. This
exuberant work will challenge your choir, but it
will be worth the work in the end. Optional full
score with violin, horn, timpani, and percussion
is available and while it is scored for TTBB
voices, it can be used with the SATB version.

My Song Is Love Unknown—arr. Paul
Monachino. This well-known text and tune for
Good Friday is artfully arranged. Alternating
between stanzas supported by organ
accompaniment and a cappella passages,
this piece is at once beautifully reflective and
powerfully moving.

O Be Joyful (Jubilate Deo)—John Leavitt.
This joyful a cappella setting opens and closes
with lively extended statements of the Latin
text, Jubilate Deo, Alleluia, set in close four-
part writing with occasional call-and-response.
The contrasting center section moves slightly
more slowly with English text adapted from
Psalm 100. It is a memorable choice for
concerts or worship.

O Splendour of God's Glory Bright—
Toby Young. This energetic setting is a real

Praise to God, Immortal Praise—Sandra
K. Tucker. A majestic anthem of thanksgiving,
this piece captures the classical spirit of the
18th-century text. Scored for choir, organ,
and C instrument, it opens and closes with
homophonic vocal writing that is nicely
contrasted with the more linear second verse.

Prayer of St. Patrick—Michael John Trotta.
This beautiful historic Irish blessing is a prayer
that is well known and loved the world over.
Set with a peaceful rhythmic simplicity, this
expressive a cappella setting allows the text
to shine through, bringing comfort and hope to
all who hear. The optional descant soars above
and is an ideal way to add additional shimmer
with solo voice or obbligato instrument. A
lovely way to close a service or concert.

Psalm 118: Alleluia—Bob Hurd. With
"Alleluia" as the refrain, this psalm setting
is meant to be used at the conclusion of the
Easter Vigil, in effect, taking the place of the
Gospel Acclamation. It is also the refrain that
serves as the Gospel Acclamation for Hurd
and Canedo's Mass of the Compassionate
Christ. Additionally, the verses of this psalm
are paired with the psalm response for Easter
Sunday, which is available as a separate
octavo (#11316922).
11415780 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.65
Psalm 139—Michael Burkhardt. A
mysterious introduction using keyboard,
optional handbells, and oboe gives way to a
slow, lyrical 6/8 setting of the psalm. Almost
like a courtly dance, the tempo fluctuates
with the spirit of the text. After a reprise of the
introductory material, the anthem becomes
almost through-composed, reflecting the
emotional arch of the words. Some a cappella
sections provide nice contrast.

Rejoice in the Lord—Hal H. Hopson. Verses
from Psalm 33 form the basis of this energetic
anthem. Hal Hopson has been known for many
years as an accomplished composer of sacred
music, and here there is both joy and lyricism.
This is not at all difficult for any choir.

Requiem—Eliza Gilkyson/arr. Craig Hella
Johnson. Singer/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson wrote
Requiem as a song of grief following the Asian
tsunami in December 2004, and the song
found a renewed audience after Hurricane
Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region. This
setting by Conspirare conductor Craig Hella
Johnson is powerful in its emotional impact.
