Ai Dievini—arr. Ethan Sperry. A mythological
song about two heavenly steeds of a god's sons,
this selection is a calm, meditative rendering
that is almost mystical. The Latvian modality
permeates the song with an eloquent tension
emerging from the pedal point moments against
the primary theme.

All That Could Never Be Said (from
"The Lost Birds")—Christopher Tin. From
the Grammy-nominated work The Lost Birds, this
simple melody inspired by children's songs is a
setting of Sara Teasdale's poem "In the End."
Showcasing her signature pairing of nihilism
and pastoral beauty, the poem is an exploration
of regret: it suggests that the consequences of
our inaction are final and absolute. There are no
second chances to speak up or to act, and all our
missed opportunities will be lost to us until we're
reunited with them in death.

The Body of the Moon—Desmond Earley.
Commissioned to mark the occasion of the total
solar eclipse in 2017, this cinematic selection was
broadcast across the Pacific Northwest of the
United States as millions experienced the totality
of the solar eclipse. The eclipse is represented
by the lyrical cello line as the choir gives voice
to the words of Galileo Galilei: "Vedere il corpo
della luna" - Behold the body of the moon! The
bass drum represents the vastness of our solar
system, and a lone vocal improvisation speaks to
the personal experience of this magical moment.
This piece beautifully captures the sense of awe
in witnessing such a monumental occurrence.

Called to Rejoice—David C. Dickau. Two
of our greatest choral artists, Charles Silvestri
and David Dickau, have united to celebrate
the powerful ability of music to heal, unify, and
inspire. The piano accompaniment adds energy
and strength to the piece, and the single word
"music" is decorated so masterfully it is a moment
of expressive genius.

Child's Elm Song—Carolyn Jennings. This
poem imploring us to use our lives for the service
and beauty of others is set to music in a flowing,
lyrical anthem. The choral writing is buoyant while
the piano accompaniment provides childlike
energy under the choir with masterful arpeggios
that require a careful touch. A beautiful addition to
the St. Olaf Choral Series.

Courting Is a Pleasure—arr. Desmond
Earley. Featuring an alto solo, this selection is
found masquerading under a variety of names
throughout the Irish tradition, such as Farewell
Ballymoney and Going to Mass Last Sunday.
A song of false love, betrayal, and emigration,
typically sung from the male perspective about a
false young woman named Molly, it is altered here
to a female singing about her dear love Johnny.
This is a lovely take on the traditional folk song
with supportive backing vocals.

Crucifixus Reimagined—Cecilia McDowall.
Commissioned by Sonoro for the second
installment of their Choral Inspirations project,
this piece was composed as a response to
Antonio Lotti's Crucifixus from Credo in F.
Use of suspensions, decorated melodies, and
counterpoint feel reminiscent of Lotti's original
work, while retaining McDowall's distinctive
contemporary style.

Do Not. For, I Am...—Todd Goodman. Trying
to find a way to support the families of the victims
of a tragic accident, the composer wrote this
comforting choral piece. Based on the poem
Immortality, also known as Do Not Stand by My
Grave and Weep, the first section is a solemn
setting of the text. The melancholy mood slowly
lightens, and the initial grief is replaced by a more
optimistic energy. In a moment of remembrance,
the choir reminds us that our lost loved ones can
be found everywhere in nature, and we should
not cry, for they are not there, they did not die.
Written in memory of Brylee Walker and Lindsay
Thompkins Jr.

Especially Do I Believe in the Negro
Race (from "Credo")—Margaret Bonds/ed.
John Michael Cooper. Written in a gospel style,
this lyrical second movement extracted from the
larger work Credo utilizes a text by W.E.B Du
Bois: "Especially do I believe in the Negro Race; in
the beauty of its genius, the sweetness of its soul,
and its strength in that meekness which shall yet
inherit this turbulent earth." The intense beauty of
the music reflects Bonds' deep affinity for the spirit
of Du Bois' words. It features a soprano soloist
throughout.
