CONCERT WORKS
A Chloris—Reynaldo Hahn/arr. Adam Burnette.
One of Hahn's more successful French art songs
for solo voice, this lyrical piece from 1916 is freshly
set in three-part harmony for treble choirs with
piano accompaniment. In a neo-Baroque style, the
accompaniment lays a continuo-like foundation
for the choral lines to display the beauty and
sensitivity of the melody and the harmonic writing.

After the Rain—Sarah Quartel. Setting words
by Chief Dan George, this optimistic work reminds
us that there is still beauty to be found in times of
trouble and that difficult days will not last forever.
This sensitive setting uses triplets against duplets
to give a sense of fluidity to the melodic phrasing.

An optional divisi descant will challenge younger
choirs while remaining accessible. Optional
djembe and shaker parts are included.

The Beauty of Life—Robert S. Cohen. This
whimsical selection sings about the joy of being
alive. The lyrics name plants and animals with
admiration and are carried by a tune that is
bubbling with energy and gratefulness. There
is even a brief moment when the children can
make animal noises in a very charming way. The
message to love and care for our planet really
comes through in this adorable piece!

us that, when encouraged, keeps dancing
and giving others hope. The simple melody

on dynamics and expression to share this truly
special message.

Smith. Employing the text from the Requiem
Mass, this dramatic, exciting, rhythmic setting
propels the angular melodies forward. The
contrasting, lyric B section allows for a brief
respite and will challenge the singers to explore
color in tone and expression. This is sure to be

high school choirs.

Do Not. For, I Am...—Todd Goodman. Trying
to find a way to support the families of the victims
of a tragic accident, the composer wrote this
comforting choral piece. Based on the poem
Immortality, also known as Do Not Stand by My
Grave and Weep, the first section is a solemn
setting of the text. The melancholy mood
slowly lightens, and the initial grief is replaced
by a more optimistic energy. In a moment of
remembrance, the choir reminds us that our lost
loved ones can be found everywhere in nature,
and we should not cry, for they are not there,
they did not die. Written in memory of Brylee
Walker and Lindsay Thompkins Jr.

Down the Silver Road—Sarah Quartel. This
selection is a comforting and uplifting setting of
the poem To F.W. by Edith Franklin Wyatt, which
describes the joy of growing old with a companion.
It was premiered by the choir of Nazareth College,
New York at a concert specifically for individuals
living with Alzheimer's or other dementias and
their families and caregivers. Alongside the
flowing lyrical melodies is a simple vocal part that
can be taught to audience members who may be
encouraged to join in when it occurs.
