MULTICULTURAL & WORLD MUSIC
Aia la 'o Pele i Hawai'i—Jace Kaholokulu
Saplan. Based on a traditional Hawaiian
chant with original music, this rousing work for
advanced treble choirs brings all the drama of
a volcanic eruption normally associated with
destruction. But in Hawaiian culture, Pele - the
goddess of volcanos and fire - also evokes awe
and veneration. Layered ostinato patterns and
dramatic divisi harmonies, along with the use of
the Ipu, a Hawaiian percussion instrument, create
an exciting experience!

Chante Waste Hoksila (My Kind-Hearted
Boy)—arr. Linthicum-Blackhorse. Here is a
traditional Lakota lullaby sung by mothers to their
young boys. The Lakota language has become
nearly extinct, but composer/arranger Linthicum-
Blackhorse has made it his life's work to bring the
language back to life. In this arrangement, the IPA
pronunciation guide is included in the body of the
music in order to make it accessible to all singers
and choirs. Dedicated to the victims of the Robb
Elementary School mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Courting Is a Pleasure—arr. Desmond
Earley. Featuring an alto solo, this selection is
found masquerading under a variety of names
throughout the Irish tradition, such as Farewell
Ballymoney and Going to Mass Last Sunday.
A song of false love, betrayal, and emigration,
typically sung from the male perspective about a
false young woman named Molly, it is altered here
to a female singing about her dear love Johnny.
This is a lovely take on the traditional folk song
with supportive backing vocals.

Exultate Pacifica—Randall Johnson.
Combining melodic and rhythmic fragments
from island cultures throughout the Pacific, this
exciting work for tenor-bass choirs uses a Latin
text and a variety of two-, three- and four-part
harmonic textures throughout. The distinctive
piano accompaniment moves the piece along
with rhythmic intensity - but then exits to give way
to a more lyrical a cappella section in four-part
harmony that features a gentle hymn from the
Solomon Islands.

Gloria—Ondi Yohan Tambunan. With the
traditional Latin lyrics "Gloria in excelsis Deo,"
this setting is anything but traditional. Including
some chant as well as stomping and clapping
throughout, this almost has the feel of a Maori
haka, and the music embodies the joy of its lyrics.

Hela Rotan—arr. Ken Steven. This is a popular
Indonesian folk song about the game of tug of war
from the island of Maluku in the Moluccas. It is a
call to live in togetherness, even though there are
differences that attract each other. Full divisi, the
native language, and close harmonies provide a
challenge, but most of the piece is ostinato-based
which provides an anchor.
