Gloria (from "Harmoniemesse")—Franz
Joseph Haydn/arr. Russell Robinson. Adapted
from the original, Hadyn's recognizable Gloria
from Harmoniemesse is accessibly set for SAB
voices. Lowered to G from the original B-flat,
these ranges sit comfortably in the voice, and
the classical harmonies and Latin text allow
the choir to explore the style while developing
solid choral technique. Suitable for services or
concerts. A playable piano part is crafted from
the original orchestral score.

Gloria (from "Mariazeller Messe")—Joseph
Haydn/ed. Ryan Kelly. Haydn's eighth setting
of the ordinary of the Mass was composed in
1782 for performance in Mariazell, Austria. The
brief opening portion of the Gloria has been
selected for this anthem, featuring Haydn's
exuberant, straightforward homophonic
choral writing true to the Classical period. The
accompaniment is an approachable orchestral
reduction for piano with optional trumpets and
timpani. Accessible to most ensembles, this
anthem offers choirs the exciting opportunity to
sing an excerpt from a large-scale choral work.

His Light in Us—Kim Andre Arnesen.
Commissioned by the St. Olaf Choir for the
2016 St. Olaf Christmas Festival, this work is
a thanksgiving, a song about the gift of a tiny
child that suggests that only the nature of love
is changeless. It sings about our renewed hope
and how light now shines because Christmas
is a new and refreshing gift; our hearts are
renewed, and our hope is renewed. This joyful

In Dulci Jubilo (from "Carols for Choirs 6")
—Cecilia McDowall. The vibrant melody of
this carol glides above harmonies that are
almost entirely diatonic - but whose originality
and frequent passing dissonances mean that
predictability is never a danger. From Carols
for Choirs 6.

In the Bleak Midwinter—Gustav Holst/arr.
Robert J. Powell. The poignancy of Gustav
Holst's tune
CRANHAM and Christina Rossetti's
notable poem, In the Bleak Midwinter, is
evident in this setting by Robert Powell. The
SAB vocal tapestry varies by verse and the
organ accompaniment can be complemented
by string quartet or by solo violin and cello.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear—arr. Daniel
Ficarri. This a cappella setting of the traditional
carol opens with a spotlight on the tenor section
with background choir "oohs." The second
stanza is more homophonic, and in the third,
the carol is sung canonically. Delicate harmonic
shading provides touches of color as angels
wing their way through the night sky. Lovely.

Joseph's Carol—John Rutter. This carol
recounts the Christmas story from the
perspective of Joseph. Two expressive verses
are taken by the solo baritone, with the chorus
performing a refrain infused with expectancy
and wonder. In the closing words of the second
solo, the choir takes on the role of the angels in
a soft accompaniment. The upper three voice
parts are designed to be approximately equal
in strength, and the carol may be accompanied
by organ or small orchestra. This carol is
dedicated to the Oxford Vaccine Team and
was premiered by Sir Bryn Terfel, The Oxford
Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Choir of
Merton College in a special tribute concert.
