No Tables Required, Vol. 2—arr. Patricia
Hurlbutt. This collection contains interesting
arrangements of three great hymns - and not
a bell change in sight! Each ringer needs only
their two bells (for the arrangement performed)
and their music. For an interesting effect, try
scattering your ringers around the room.
Tunes:
HYRFYDOL; NETTLETON and CWM
RHONDDA.
Great for ringing on the table, too!

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing—arr.
Julie Turner. One of the great hymns of the
church is given rich textures and engaging
musical ideas in this stunning arrangement.
The verses are short and move quickly,
necessitating quick switches between the
variations. A flowing verse with optional
handchimes (3 or 5 octaves) changes the
pace, as does the final, majestic verse.

O God, Our Help in Ages Past—arr. John
A. Behnke. This well-known hymn tune dates
back to the Baroque period and was used by
composers like Bach and Buxtehude even
before it was sung in churches with this text.
The text is about time: our fleeting time and
God's presence throughout time. Time is
portrayed with a bell motive chiming the hour,
a lovely countermelody, the constancy of the
singing bells, and then the pealing celebratory
bells for the final stanza. Optional flute and
cello add foundational sound and gravity to the
piece and are included in the full score.

O When Shall I See Jesus (ECSTACY, 106
from The Sacred Harp)—arr. Matthew Prins.
ECSTASY from The Sacred Harp is quite
representative of the early American music
form, and this setting accurately reflects the
style. It should be played as quickly as is
reasonable for the group, with attention to
clarity and precision in the rhythm while clearly
emphasizing the melody. Echoes, mallets,
thumb damps, and marts add to the excitement.

On Wings Like Eagles—Linda Boatright.
Inspired by Isaiah 40:30-31, "those who hope
in the Lord will soar on wings like eagles,"
the lovely but simple melody is established
immediately and is creatively expanded
through different ranges, voicings, and a few
contrapuntal motifs. Delicate descending
sixteenth-note patterns in the treble bells
accompany the sweet melody in the chimes.
Expressive through dynamics and tempo
changes, the powerful yet sensitive ending
incorporates rapid random malleting in
the 6 and 7 bells with inner voices ringing
descending sixteenth-note patterns. Your
audience will be left holding their collective
breath as it all naturally fades away to silence.

Out of Darkness—Jason W. Krug. This
forceful original work is the perfect choice for
worship or concert use! With no notes shorter
than quarter notes, beginning ringers can
instead focus on the many bell changes found
throughout. Some of the trickier changes are
indicated by cue-sized notes, making them
optional for less-experienced ringers, but
providing a bit of extra challenge for musicians
approaching an intermediate level of ringing.

Praise the Lord!—arr. Nicholas Hanson.
Enjoy this energetic arrangement of two
familiar hymns of praise: Praise to the Lord,
the Almighty and To God Be the Glory. With
rhythmic mallets in the bass, treble bells
play through the first tune. Then, to contrast,
handchimes (three octaves) play the second
tune. The third time is a blend of the two
melodies. This is accessible music for worship
that will lift both hearts and spirits.
11418037 3-5 Octave. . . . . . . . . . L2+ 5.25
Praise to the Living God—arr. Mark S.
Arnold. The arrangement of this traditional
Hebrew melody (
LEONI) prominently features
a number of techniques, including martellato,
martellato lifts, shakes, and malleting. The
minor key and contrasting sections make it
appropriate for Lent or general worship.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty—arr. Sandra
Eithun. Suited for sacred or festival use, this
arrangement is available in two compatible
settings and is perfect for developing
ensembles or for more advanced ringers with
limited preparation time. The upbeat opening
is engaging, and throughout the piece, LV
passages, mallets, and dynamic changes
provide variety and interest. With limited bell
changes and straightforward rhythms, your
ensemble will have this mastered in no time.

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
(
LAUDA ANIMA)—arr. Sandra Eithun. This
lyrical arrangement is an elegantly graceful
offering teeming with rich chords wrapped
around a beautiful, familiar melody. With two
compatible settings, it is ideal for worship,
concerts, and festivals.

Precious Lord, Take My Hand—arr. Joel
Raney. Beautifully scored for handbells,
optional 3-7 octave handchimes, and piano,
this arrangement of the classic hymn tune
begins with handchime vibrato that gives a
vintage feel before moving into a slow gospel
groove. The arrangement includes many
techniques and uses the instrument's full
spectrum of timbres.

Procession and Exaltation—Karen L.
Buckwalter. Created in two parts, this piece
begins with a processional that is built by
layering ostinato patterns until the entire choir
is engaged. When the processing ringers arrive
at the handbell tables, the piece flows nicely
into the second part, Exaltation. A joyous piece,
it is very chordal and offers a festive opening to
your worship service or concert.

Reflection on Stuttgart—attr. Christian F.
Witt/arr. Karen Lakey Buckwalter. The tune
STUTTGART may be found in hymnals with a
variety of titles including Come, Thou Long
Expected Jesus and Child of Blessing, Child
of Promise. The familiar hymn tune is artfully
arranged for handbells with piano and flute,
which gives support to less experienced
handbell ringers. The interplace between the
three instruments creates a thoughtful and
meditative setting.

Rejoice and Be Glad ("May all who seek
you rejoice and be glad in you" - Psalm
40:16)—Joe Galyon. Here is a delightful
original work with a rhythmic foundation built on
mixed meter throughout, featuring a cheerful
melody perfectly suited to the rhythm. Nicely
placed mart lifts add to the engaging pulse of
the music. Feeling a bit more calm, a lovely
countermelody section is interspersed with the
main theme. The addition of treble clef mallets
leads into the
DARWALL'S 148TH tune rung on
handchimes (3 octaves). Further developments
lead back to the original theme with excited
anticipation of the glorious ending. This is a
joyous work sure to become that special go-to
selection for all celebratory occasions!

Originally for 12-bell ensemble, now available
for full choir with three octaves of handchimes.

techniques add to the fun.

Rest in God's Grace—Craig Laumann. This
flowing, lyrical original work written in 3/4
time presents a gentle dancelike feel using
LV to support a beautiful melody. A variation
on the melody is featured in handchimes with
bells gently air malleting as accompaniment.
This sweet, accessible piece will work well to
transition your Level 2 group to Level 3 and
will be a lovely addition to more advanced
ringers' repertoire.

Rigaudon—Karen L. Buckwalter. Rigaudon
(pronounced Rih-gah-DOHN) is a lively
dance for handbells with optional finger
cymbals and hand drum. Filled with colorful
harmonies due to a combination of both
major and mixolydian modes, it makes use
of several percussive techniques that will
keep your ringers and audience engaged. A
wonderful concert piece, this will be a great
addition to your handbell library.

Riposo (Rest, My Soul)—Linda Scholes.
This tender original tune is a beautiful musical
statement. The simple, lyrical melody is given
delicate underscoring with lush chords, and
the melody moves throughout the ensemble,
giving all ringers a chance to shine. The
energy builds to a bold final verse underscored
by full, malleted chords in the bass. A very
approachable musical statement for church or
concert use.
