Northern Lights—Yukiko Nishimura. The
northern lights - aurora borealis - are the subject
of this stunning piece which weaves together
individual musical lines to create a beautiful
texture and sonority. The waves of light are
similar to the waveform of sound frequencies,
and these linear musical sequences depict that
concept. A spectacular work that will captivate
your students. (3:50)

Novo Lenio—Samuel Hazo. This is a Samuel
Hazo's National Band Association award-
winning composition, a continuous three-
movement work that offers various styles
and much to keep your interest. Based on a
school alma mater, the sections are varied in
mood yet cohesive in thematic material. The
first movement, Remembrance, is somewhat
somber in tone; the second movement Qui
Non Proficit Deficit is more dissonant; and the
final movement A New Beginning is meant to
sound full and proud.

Pelican Dance—Steve Dunn. Quirky, fun, and
fresh, this dancelike composition was inspired
by the pelicans observed on the composer's
way to work. The opening motif, played by
the entire ensemble in the first measure, is
fundamental to the entire work. Stated in some
form at the beginning of each musical section, it
even appears as a bass line. Performed at one
tempo throughout, this can be used to work on
dynamic contrasts that are so essential in music
performance while also reinforcing how a theme
can be changed and developed throughout a
piece. Percussion drives the energy and lets
your percussionists develop their skills on hand
percussion. Enjoy the dance!

and is the winner of the 2003 William Revelli
Memorial Composition Contest sponsored by
the National Band Association.

the way. Numerous reports of Big Foot and
spectacular views are envisioned in musical
moments of uncertainty with beautiful chorales.

it's fully realized, reflecting the "purple mountain
majesties" that inspired its writing. A different
kind of patriotic or festival piece.
