Composed in 2005 for Solowerke fur Wettbewerb (Solo Pieces for Contests) in Austria, this rhapsody starts rather unconventionally with a cadenza that leads to a lyrical andante in the classic A-B-A format. Contrasting the lyrical opening, the fast ending section in rondo form puts the alto saxophone in the spotlight as virtuoso solo instrument. The essence of both parts are the sound and rhythmical expansion of the two interludes: an andante in 7/8 time and a minimal piece in the allegro, giving the work an extraordinary dimension that offers both musicians and audience a truly unique experience. Due to the great success of the version for concert band, an adaptation was made for fanfare band. 11521270 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .96.28 Riptides—Katahj Copley. Explore the fear of the unknown with this turbulent work depicting the dangerous nature of the ocean. You will encounter sounds such as snarling muted brass, glissandos, raucous rhythms, and harsh articulations. The percussion in this work can be described as eccentric and will fully engage all of your young musicians. A must-have addition! 11332972 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .225.00 River of Life—Steven Reineke. We urge you to look at this important work! This composer is the resident composer for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and we feel that this is an incredible composition...the highs, the lows, the development, the scoring, the transitions, the themes...all point to a piece that must be given a place in the band repertoire. Best of all, is that this work will appeal on several levels, the melodies and rhythms immediately grab you, but on a deeper level, the composer's skill is quite evident. Our highest recommendations! 2323699 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .76.00 Safe Harbor—Robert Longfield. Sparkling woodwinds, triumphant brass, and colorful percussion highlight this enthralling overture. Scored for everyone in the band to have an interesting part, the piece will work in a variety of slots in your concert or festival program. 11518906 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Scramble—Todd Stalter. A tumultuous concert opener or closer intended to depict two characteristics of the title, the frantic collecting of things together in a disorderly way, and darting about quickly with a sense of urgency. Once the theme is presented the fun really starts! The action revs up as the musical "parts" are separated and combined in unique and haphazard combinations, all at break-neck speed that will leave everyone breathless! 10305668 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .78.00 Sea Songs—Ralph Vaughan Williams. One of the simpler works by Vaughan Williams for band, this setting of English sea songs was originally written in 1924. The scoring is direct and straightforward, resulting in a most rewarding yet highly playable work. 151928 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .95.00 Sea Songs—Ralph Vaughan Williams/arr. Ed Huckeby. Originally the fourth movement of Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite, this flexible arrangement brings a classic gem to a larger number of ensembles. Includes Princess Royal; Admiral Benbow and Portsmouth. 11517912 Band Set & Score Flexible instrumentation . . .75.00 The Seal Lullaby—Eric Whitacre. This loving and dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of a mother rocking her child to sleep. The piece was inspired by the classic Rudyard Kipling poem White Seal. Magical! 10281862 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .125.00 Second Suite in F—Holst/arr. Longfield. In this adaptation of the landmark work for band, the extreme ranges have been adjusted for young players, the instrumentation has been updated to that of the contemporary concert band and liberal cues have been added, particularly for oboe, bassoon and horn. The integrity of the original is completely intact and will serve as a wonderful experience for young bands. 10022289 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .95.00 Sedona—Steven Reineke. Don't miss this distinctive composition! Having has had several wonderful pieces published already, this successful composer has captured in musical ideas the natural landscape of mountains and wide open spaces, and uses them to paint a musical canvas that is at once bold, entertaining, and filled with life. A short, memorable theme runs throughout the work, showing up in a delicate flute solo, an intricate woodwind fugue, a warm trombone solo, and a bold, triadic trumpet statement that will pick you up right out of your seat. A marvelous piece that we highly recommend to all bands! 2438364 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .78.00 Serenata—Leroy Anderson/arr. Mark Rogers. Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler praised the piece as among his favorites. Lyrics were added by Mitchell Parish, which would lead to recordings by the likes of Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole. With a beguine rhythm as a background, the Latin American serenade would give the piece its title. This is the first-ever edition to offer a full score, exposing this enchanting work to new generations of audiences. 11518691 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .80.00 Serenity—Ola Gjeilo/trans. J. Eric Wilson. Beautifully arranged by J. Eric Wilson along with the composer, this version for wind band maintains all the wonder and magic of the original choral work. The opening is ethereal and somber, with sustained chords in clarinets and bowed percussion supporting a delicate oboe solo. The middle section shifts the principal modality from minor to major, and the layering orchestration and rising tessitura creates a tremendous rush of energy that leads to a triumphant climax. The closing section returns to the timbre of the opening, but now painted with hopefulness and healing. 10521141 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .85.00 Seventeen Come Sunday (from "English Folk Song Suite" Mvt. 1)—Ralph Vaughan Williams/arr. Ed Huckeby. The famous march from Ralph Vaughan Williams' iconic "Folk Song Suite" has been masterfully arranged, allowing bands with limited instrumentation to enjoy the uniqueness of this classic work. Every original melodic line, chord, and nuance is included so it can be performed in its original style, even by ensembles with very limited instrumentation. This is a must-have for any band library. A true band standard! 11206929 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .60.00 Shepherd's Hey—Percy Grainger/arr. Rogers. This is a most welcome publication! This well known piece has long been available in an edition with only Grainger's compressed score. This newly edited set of parts comes with a full score that directors will really appreciate. As for the music itself, let us just say that this delightful piece is such a major part of the foundation of the wind repertoire that it should be in every library! 2313625 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Shipyard Trudge (Concert March)—Matthew Manning. Looking for an exciting new concert march? This is it! Drawing inspiration from shanties and seafaring songs, this minor-mode march provides memorable melodies, a lyrical trio, and wonderful counterpoint. A great addition to your next concert or festival performance! 11515769 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .75.00 Shortcut Home—Dana Wilson. Shortcut Home is a rousing fanfare that features each section of the ensemble. With exciting drive and jazz-based interludes, the piece cascades towards its home of C-major. Shortcut Home is a perfect attention-grabber for the opening or close of a concert. (2:55) 2701349 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .75.00 Slava!—Leonard Bernstein/arr. Robert Longfield. The transcription of this exuberant overture has become a staple of band repertoire and is a proven programming favorite. Constructed using two contrasting themes that combine near the end, this careful adaptation puts it at a more approachable grade level yet still retains the energy and authenticity of the original. 10910736 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .85.00 Sleep—Eric Whitacre. Take a serious look at this one! Eric Whitacre has crafted an achingly beautiful work, magnificent in its broad, sweeping lines and layering of sound. This haunting chorale begins softly and slowly blossoms to a powerful climax. It makes a fine stand-alone band piece, but can also be performed with SATB chorus, with original text by celebrated American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. This is a superior choice for creating an intimate moment in your concert performance. 2475757 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .125.00 Smiling After the Rain—Yukiko Nishimura. This sonorous work for concert band will stretch the musicianship of your players. Harmonically rich, the scoring is used to great effect to achieve significant moments. The heartfelt inspiration behind the piece makes it perfect for teaching expressive concepts. A great selection for your bands if you are looking to challenge them musically. 11198580 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Solas Ane (Yesterday's Joy)—Samuel Hazo. With a unique blend of flowing lines and lush textures coupled with dynamic Celtic drumming, this musical creation is a very stylized and effective setting for wind band. Interspersed are quiet moments with soloistic woodwind lines that contrast nicely with the emotional full-band passages. 10022282 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .80.00 Some treasures are heavy with human tears—John Mackey. The story of this work begins with a tragedy, but that's not where it ends. Although it commemorates a specific catastrophe, the piece is not programmatic. Instead, it's a meditation on grief, transcending elegizing a singular horrific event and instead representing how we cope with all tragedies. Beginning with the peacefulness of a lullaby, the piece takes a simple motive and transports it through a series of emotions that include denial, shock, fury, and anguish before finding acceptance. Throughout, conflicting harmonies present an internal turbulence that peaks in a climactic wail of agony bordering on rage. Although the ending projects a return to peace, it is left incomplete with the final gesture of a single muted trumpet rising from the silence in a bright flash only to be suddenly extinguished. - from program notes by Jacob Wallace 11372156 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .195.00 Someone to Watch over Me—arr. Chris Sharp. George Gershwin's moving ballad is beautifully scored for the mature concert band. A lovely change of pace for your concert program. 11515305 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .75.00 Songs of Old Kentucky—Brant Karrick. Exhibit the proud heritage of American folk music with this setting of tunes from the Cumberland Mountain region. From traditional ballads to knee-slapping fun songs, you'll find them all in this well-written presentation of John Riley, The Lonesome Scenes of Winter, Sourwood Mountain, Frog Went A-Courtin' and Loving Hannah. 10032526 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Southern Hymn—Samuel R. Hazo. The original themes used in this beautiful setting are intended to be played in the style of a slow Southern folk hymn, similar to Amazing Grace or Shenandoah. Using suspensions and resolutions as well as calm moments and powerfully emotional builds, this is a marvelous work for expanding your ensemble's stylistic and dynamic range. 10072347 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .80.00 VISIT JWPEPPER.COM ePRINT
