Rise of the Unicorn—Rossano Galante.
Composed as a sequel to the popular work
Cry of the Unicorn (2011), this exciting and
dramatic piece follows the continuing story
of the mythical creature through adventures,
danger, and triumph. Composed in a cinematic
style, sweeping themes and rich scoring help
make this a memorable work for the symphonic
stage. Recorded by the Central Winds: Music
Educators' Wind Ensemble, Syracuse, NY -
Andrew Perry and Dr. James Tapia, directors.

River of Life—Steven Reineke. We urge you
to look at this important work! This composer
is the resident composer for the Cincinnati
Pops Orchestra and we feel that this is an
incredible composition...the highs, the lows,
the development, the scoring, the transitions,
the themes...all point to a piece that must be
given a place in the band repertoire. Best of all,
is that this work will appeal on several levels, the
melodies and rhythms immediately grab you, but
on a deeper level, the composer's skill is quite
evident. Our highest recommendations!

Russian Christmas Music—Alfred Reed. Based
on an ancient Russian Christmas carol, a good
deal of original material, and some motif elements
from liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox
Church, this is a massive, powerful work that
provides a real showcase for a mature band.

Satiric Dances (for A Comedy by Aristophanes)
—Norman Dello Joio. This composition, which
is a staple on state and festival lists, features
Mediterranean folk dance influences and offers
a distinctive and dramatic setting for band.

Saturn: The Ringed Planet—Rob Romeyn.
Take part in a musical journey to a planet that
has inspired us for generations! Starting with
a build-up to departure, the music hurls us
through space for a closer look at this celestial
wonder. Let your imagination take flight with this
colorful and creative fully flexible adaptation.

Scrimshaw Tales—Carl Strommen. Scrimshaw
is the craft of whalebone and ivory carving.
Inspired by the composer's stay in Barrow,
Alaska, the composition depicts the days of
Alaskan fishing and whaling crews. Starting
broadly and majestically, it quickly moves to
a lively and energetic section that features
syncopation and lets you introduce the concept
of canonic entrances. A return to the initial
thematic material brings the piece to an exciting
conclusion. Although challenging in many
ways, this work fully rewards all performers and
listeners with a thrilling musical journey.

Second Suite in F—Gustav Holst/arr. Colin
Matthews. Written in 1905, this exceptional
suite, based on English folk songs, is every
bit as important and masterful as Holst's First
Suite in E Flat. Together, these two works
provide critically important cornerstones for
any good band library.

Song of the Fjords—Carol Brittin Chambers.
This incredibly descriptive and colorful work
really is the whole package. Depicting the
beauty of Norway and Scandinavia, the well-
developed themes are exciting from beginning
to end. The brass section writing is superb,
and the musical impact points are too many
to count. This challenging work will be a great
addition for bands that are looking to push their
skills. A true tone poem!

Stranger at My Door—Jack Stamp. A
companion piece to Border Dance, this work is
written in memory of Peg Bowden, a resident
of southern Arizona, who was active in groups
assisting migrants by providing food, shelter,
clothing, and medical assistance. This tone
poem opens with a rendition of O Little Town
of Bethlehem accompanied out of time by a
haunting melody in the low winds. An original
melody, Peg's Theme, and the hymn tune
Bera (The Good Samaritan) are interwoven
in a rhythmic fantasia. Though it incorporates
a well-known Christmas carol, this work is
appropriate for all seasons due to its timeless
message of selflessness in the face of danger.

Sword of Saint Michael—Kelly Bennette.
This piece has a delightful melody and the
flavor of a transcription, but it is an action-
packed original for concert band. Directors
will revel in its big, beautiful sound and parts
to challenge every section.

A Symphonic Celebration—Robert Sheldon.
Tuneful melodies and playful rhythms in
various meters are all featured in this energetic
and uplifting concert selection. Colorful
orchestration and moments of lyricism add to
the variety of styles and textures, all providing
a stellar showcase for advanced ensembles.

Tarantella—Carol Brittin Chambers. Lively and
bouncy, this original work is written primarily in
6/8. The parts are written with great attention to
the idiosyncrasies of the individual instruments,
which not only aids considerably with the
technical demands but also makes for a
wonderful overall sound. The cleverly inserted
heavy swinging quote of The Itsy Bitsy Spider
is one for the books!
11502001 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .105.00
Tempered Steel—Charles Young. The key
word here is "steel"... or metal. Metal clangs, it
blows, it vibrates, it excites, and it has strength.
This urgent, driving piece has those qualities,
and you'll find it's a neat and unique addition
to the repertoire. Expressing a celebration of
our triumph over unavoidable hardships and
obstacles we regularly face that force us to
be stronger, resilient, or "tempered," the piece
explores the metallic sonorities of the wind
band to great effect.
2411700 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .150.00
Until the Scars (adapted from "Hubris,"
Mvmt. 1 from "Wine-Dark Sea: Symphony
for Band")—John Mackey. This striking
adaptation has all the intensity and drama of
the original. The powerful opening creates high
drama, as if mighty forces gather to prepare
for battle. Once assembled, the music takes
on a quieter but more suspenseful nature,
the tension building as the forces grow close.
Concluding in a virtual firestorm of sound and
fury, all the forces of winds, percussion and
brass combine for a breathtaking finish.

Urban Dances—Erik Morales. Rhythm is the
key element of this vibrant and contemporary
piece which incorporates many of the rhythms
found in today's popular music. The melodic
and thematic elements, while important, play
a supportive and secondary role. In many
instances the thematic material floats over the
rhythmic pulse creating a double time feel. It's
lively and persistent throughout with very active
and involved percussion.

Valkyrie Rising—Chris Pilsner. Powerful,
dramatic, and adventurous, this incredible
work for concert band is full of grand melodies,
layered textures, and interweaving rhythms
that create nonstop energy for the entire
duration. Perfect as an opener or closer to any
concert, the music vividly portrays a cinematic
journey of one of the most dynamic figures in
Norse mythology.
11520740 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .145.00
Valley of the Fallen Lords—Lucas Johnson.
Showcasing the power and brilliance of the
brass, the tenderness and technical capabilities
of the woodwinds, the majestic sound of the
horns, and the drive of the percussion, this
powerful and lush work puts the full scope of
the concert band on display!
11517894 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .95.00
Variations on a Korean Folk Song—John
Barnes Chance. A very deservedly popular
composition consisting of five contrasting
variations on a lyrical Korean folk song. Stated
first in unison by the woodwinds, the material
is brilliantly explored and developed. The
percussion section is used extensively, both
rhythmically and melodically.
153544 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .95.00
Variations on a Shaker Melody—Aaron
Copland. Scored for band by the composer,
this outstanding work uses the Shaker tune
Simple Gifts, which was first brought to
public attention in Copland's "Appalachian
Spring." This beautiful folk tune is treated very
imaginatively and colorfully.
153635 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .85.00
What Joy Shall Fill My Heart—arr. Leslie
Gilreath. This beautiful and emotional work,
dedicated to the composer's mother, is based
on a traditional Swedish melody set to a text
by Carl Boberg in 1885. Once combined with
the Swedish folk tune, his stanzas of awe
and wonder gained popularity around the
world, particularly following Stuart Hine's 1953
translation to English, known as How Great
Thou Art.

The Wild One! (Circus March)—Brian
Balmages. A blistering circus march designed
to showcase your entire ensemble. This
adrenaline-packed work will bring your
audience to its feet regardless of where you
program it in your concert. Cleverly combining
the traditional march form with contemporary
elements, this barnburner is sure to turn
heads and be a ton of fun for performers
and audiences alike. There are plenty of
opportunities for percussionists, including
several optional parts for directors with larger
sections. (2:40)

The Witch and The Saint—Steven Reineke.
A major contribution that's sure to become a
part of standard repertoire. This ten-minute
tone poem in one movement comprises five
distinct sections that tell the legend of twin
sisters born in Germany in 1588. Starting with
a Gregorian chant motif, all manner of musical
sorcery is used to represent the turbulent lives
of these vastly misunderstood women. Steven
Reineke brings us yet another fascinating work
of lasting popularity.
