CONCERT BAND Editors' Choice 2023 New Basic Library Available via ePrint Downloadable All Prices in U.S. Dollars & Subject To Publisher Revision 58 Go to cart CONCERT & CONTEST medium-advanced Hot as Blue Blazes—Robert W. Smith. A musical tour de force for the concert band. The American jazz style and its historic roots in American music are the inspiration for this showcase for the more advanced band. Featuring blazing woodwind lines combined with powerful brass and driving percussion, this is a significant programming choice that will be enthusiastically received by your ensemble musicians. The resulting audience reaction will elevate your ensemble to another level of musical appreciation. Hot! 11518459 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .150.00 Hymn to a Blue Hour—John Mackey. The blue hour refers to the moment of day between twilight and complete darkness, a time of day known for its romantic, spiritual, ethereal qualities. The colors of fading light are beautifully reflected in sound by various instrumental combinations and textures. Building to a brilliant climax, the brightest moment is reached before dissipating slowly into a warm, peaceful finish, as the light fades to darkness. A stunning work. 10189089 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .225.00 Hypnotic Memories—Rossano Galante. This charming musical offering is a departure from this popular composer's usual epic style. Originally scored for 15 players, this piece is more intimate than his thickly orchestrated grand works. Stylistically, a minimal approach is used, with memorable melodic lines peacefully unfolding shifting ostinato patterns. 10999646 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Inchon—Robert W. Smith. Honoring the "forgotten war," Robert W. Smith offers this significant work in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Korean conflict. It's beautifully scored to balance the delicate oriental melodies with the dramatic and frenzied passages that mirror the conflict. Colorfully orchestrated, with percussion simulating the sound of a helicopter landing and parts for piano and alto flute (with cues for C flute), it is a thoroughly stunning tonal collage. A significant, expansive work, one which experienced concert bands will proudly add to their repertoire. We give this our highest recommendation! 2700137 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .87.00 The Inferno—Robert W. Smith. Truly colossal! This is the first movement of Robert Smith's epic work "The Divine Comedy." Advanced groups will welcome the challenges and reap the rewards inherent in the piece. Very contemporary in nature, The Inferno includes furious woodwind ostinatos, huge blocks of sound, tremendous percussion, and the imagery of Hell's inferno! Not for the faint of heart. 2322691 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .87.00 It Is Well...—Jason K. Nitsch. This longingly beautiful rendition of the well-known hymn tune uses lyrical motion and powerful climactic moments to make a bold statement, begging performers and audiences alike to ponder and reflect long after its closing statement. 11414435 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .85.00 Juba Dance—Robert Nathaniel Dett/arr. Loras John Schissel. Nathaniel Dett was one of John Philip Sousa's favorite composers. Dett's music is filled with melodic charm and harmonic interest. This wonderful rag, originally written for piano, plays and sounds much like a march. 11518900 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .65.00 Lyric for Band—George Walker/arr. Luci Disano. In 1946, George Walker was still doing graduate work at the Curtis Institute when he composed Lyric for Strings, which would prove over the coming decades to become one of the most performed and enduring string orchestra works of the 20th century. This first-ever edition for symphonic wind band was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. 11518683 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .75.00 The March of Time—Andrew Boysen Jr. Playing on the words of Tim Mahr's name inspired the composer to write a rollicking "Ma(h)rch" alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 "Tim(e)." Embedded within the trio section are references to several of Tim's best-known works, including Fantasia in G; Endurance; The Soaring Hawk; Sol Solator; Hey!; Imagine If You Will and A Mighty March. Although written for a large wind ensemble, ample cues are provided for ensembles with more limited instrumentation. This is the perfect closer or encore for your next concert. 11521112 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .95.00 Metroplex (Three Postcards from Manhattan) —Robert Sheldon. A dazzling view of the sites and sounds of a dynamic city. Opening is a vision of the tall buildings and concrete canyons of the New York skyline, followed by an urban jazz scene in a club in Harlem. The close is a wild taxi ride through the heavy traffic of this fascinating city. 10014415 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .78.00 Midnight Ride—Rossano Galante. The midnight ride of Paul Revere is depicted in three main themes: Paul Revere's motif is a romantic, heroic melody that captures his bravery and tenacity; the Brown Beauty theme (Revere's horse) incorporates a slower, lush musical offering that captures the strength and beauty of this animal; and the final thematic material represents the ride itself with a soaring melody accompanied by fast, rhythmic ostinati. (5:45) 11511661 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .100.00 Mischievous Behavior—Rossano Galante. All kinds of visions come to mind when you hear this zany, whimsical original work. Perhaps a dream sequence, maybe the hustle and bustle of rush-hour traffic, or the shenanigans of clowns under the big top. A wonderful change of pace for concert programs. 11402240 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .92.00 Molly on the Shore—Percy Grainger/arr. Mark Rogers. One of the most famous of the technical showpieces for the mature band! Grainger ingeniously combines two Cork Reels, Molly On The Shore and Temple Hill in a setting which features Grainger's most brilliant writing for winds. And making this edition even more important is the full score, never before available, which has been assembled by Mark Rogers. Highly recommended! 2403392 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .110.00 A Movement for Rosa—Mark Camphouse. This emotional, moving work was written to honor Rosa Parks, whose contribution to desegregation still stands today. Not only are strength and determination depicted, but also the harsh realities of the times. An important work in the repertoire. 2312338 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .140.00 Mutations—Robert W. Smith. Featuring the concert band's brass section and an offstage trumpet ensemble, this contemporary work draws its inspiration from the mutation of sound and its transmission throughout the ensemble and performance environment. From a dark and mysterious beginning with muted sounds on all brass instruments, the timbre and sonority slowly progresses through various musical environments. As the brass section switches to open sounds, the result is a stunning and glorious musical statement that transforms the ensemble and audience alike. 11518465 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .120.00 Of Sailors and Whales (Five Scenes From Melville)—W. Francis McBeth. This monumental and dramatic work, inspired by Melville's "Moby Dick," is rapidly gaining wide acceptance, and appears on a number of state lists. 2238806 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .210.00 Orbital—Adrian B. Sims. Referring to the orbit of an electron, planet, or stars in a galaxy, this thrilling work propels the listener back and forth between musical ideas representing tremendous nuclear and gravitational forces. The heroic central theme truly soars as the piece comes to a thrilling and powerful conclusion! (4:30) 11511668 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .100.00 Original Suite—Gordon Jacob/ed. Heidenreich. Available in this revised edition with full score, this compelling classic comprises three contrasting movements. The first movement is a stately march, followed by the andante second movement, with the third movement providing a sprightly, upbeat finale. 10034295 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .125.00 Overture to Lysistrata—Mark Adamo/arr. Peter Stanley Martin. "In its original scoring, this Overture to 'Lysistrata' drawn from its heroine's first cabaletta, an aria of longing, and the raucous finale of the first act already saluted the wind orchestra, with its two saxophones (alto and baritone) and lavish use of mallet percussion. But here, Peter Stanley Martin's deft and artful arrangement perhaps expresses the character of the music even more eloquently than the orchestral version does." - Mark Adamo 11517379 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .125.00 Pacific Crest—Robert Sheldon. It's hard not to be inspired by the majestic peaks and sweeping views along the Pacific Crest Trail that traverses the Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges from Canada to the Mexican border. This music depicts the towering peaks, panoramic views, and the joy of hiking this incredible trail. 11419876 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Pageant—Vincent Persichetti. Premiered in 1953, Pageant is a symphonic overture which features a slow, homophonic section followed by a lively "Parade" section. 241117 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .140.00 Phase Shift—Robert Langenfeld. A phase shift is a change in the location or timing of a point within a cycle of a repetitive waveform. In this distinctive work, this concept is explored by grouping the ensemble into nontraditional Side A and B groupings that shift the sound away from their ordinary stations. Enveloping the listener, a four-note motif is passed from side to side and shifted between instrument families that are grouped by their locationon the stage. Punctuated brass fanfares mark each phase shift and provide driving motion that leads to a high-energy conclusion. Optional electronic parts are provided for a truly unique experience! 11418028 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .90.00 Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons—Steven Reineke. This ten-minute work, on the easy side of the medium-advanced level, successfully conveys the awe-inspiring grandeur of Pilatus mountain in Switzerland. It opens with the brass slowly blowing air through their instruments, as if to simulate the mountain wind, or perhaps the breath of dragons! A compelling work! 2472462 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . .98.00 Puszta—Jan Van der Roost. Four high-spirited Gypsy Dances reminiscent of the Hungarian and Slavonic Dances by Brahms and Dvorak. 2203354 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .145.00 Rapture—Brian Balmages. Make a powerful statement with this intense introspective work. The opening exclamation by percussion becomes a fixture throughout, supported by epic brass lines and energetic woodwind flourishes. Inspired by the hymn Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending, the music contrasts themes of pure joy and euphoria with intense reflection and peace. Covering the gamut of emotions, this thrilling and cinematic work is as intense in its lyrical moments as it is in the height of its rapturous glory. (8:15) 11511673 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .110.00 Ride—Samuel Hazo. Vibrant and full of energy! From the first note, the relentless pace and invigorating metrical shifts demand the complete attention of the audience. With a large battery of percussion and dynamic wind parts, the feeling of continuous motion is achieved. Yet, as a testimony to the skill of the composer, the themes have a certain melodiousness and flowing quality that add depth and appeal to the work. This is an outstanding composition to be added to the repertoire of mature bands. 2701351 Band Set & Score . . . . . . .115.00 Connect with your peers, grow your professional network, and share ideas. jwpepper.com/events
