16th Suite—arr. Andrew H. Dabczynski. A
set of four contrasting folk tunes introduces
common 16th-note patterns to beginning
students. This concert etude allows students
to practice each pattern in different contexts:
melodies, accompaniments, and a variety of
simple meters and keys. Whether performed
as a suite or as individual movements, this
suite will enhance any concert program while
developing essential skills.

Alley Cat Struttin'—David Samuel/arr. Caryn
Wiegand Neidhold. The original version
for jazz ensemble has now been realized
for the young string orchestra. This bluesy,
swinging chart uses a pizzicato walking bass
line throughout, a written violin solo, and lots
of tutti rhythms, making this an excellent and
accessible choice for a young ensemble just
starting on the path to learning jazz. Drum set
part optional but recommended.
