Just So in the North—Ignatius Sancho/
arr. Dion Morales. This fun arrangement in
D major is based on an 18th-century dance
tune written by escaped slave Ignatius
Sancho. Each section gets a turn with the
melody. Skills students will reinforce include
string crossings, pizzicato, arco and back,
and eighth, quarter, and half-note rhythms.
Basses practice easy shifting. Instructions
for the dance that goes with the tune
are included, so don't be surprised if the
audience dances along!

"Exotic Butterflies" is the translation of the title
of this Latin-flavored selection. Written in a

strings and lilting melodies create the light
effect needed for the butterfly imagery.

A Matter of Time—Doug Spata. Here's a
dynamic original work that will challenge
your middle-level students with mixed time
signatures and give your cello section the
spotlight! Simple accompaniments that
emphasize a steady beat are subverted by
syncopated melodies and 2/4 interjections.
The music settles into an even 3/4 in the middle
section, but soon ramps back up to an exciting
asymmetrical conclusion. Students will love
taking on the rhythmic challenge, and teachers
will appreciate the emphasis on counting and
paying attention. (2:15)

Mind Games—Brian Balmages. This eerie
composition employs colors and harmonies
rarely found at this level. Based on harmonic
illusions where notes seem to drift out of context,
Mind Games introduces low-1 fingerings in
a pedagogical way, encouraging students to
maintain a relaxed wrist. The Cello section is
introduced to easy backward extensions, and
bass players see some simple 1st finger shifting.
Brian Balmages has written an extremely
colorful work full of imagery equally suited as a
festival piece or lighter work. (2:15)

Momentum—Robert Longfield. Here's a very
creative work in a simple ABA form that will show
your orchestra in the best light. It begins with a
driving rhythmic melody that generates a great
deal of intensity. As the "Momentum" begins to
slow, your first violin has a brief solo opportunity
to show off some lyrical playing over pizzicato
strings. The haunting melody moves toward a
glorious key change, and a brief passage for
solo string quartet gives a captivating change
of texture. It ends with a dramatic return to the
opening material. Very accessible and a great
addition to your next concert!
