WINTER & HOLIDAY
On the Hill—arr. Roman Surzha. This
Ukrainian Christmas folk song is inserted into a
modern harmonic framework. The cyclic form,
characteristic of Ukrainian carols, is divided
by harmonic constructions that separate the
couplets from each other, giving space that sets
off the lyrical beauty of the text. Sung syllables
meant to imitate a plucked instrument permeate
the piece and provide a constant energy until the
final coda fades away.

Once in Royal David's City—arr. Matthew
Culloton. Bridging ancient and modern, this
arrangement of an historic English Christmas
carol re-invigorates it with a highly expressive
contemporary harmonic palette. The choral
texture is a cappella with quite a bit of divisi, and
the piece seamlessly flows through a spectacular
modulation to the final verse.
