Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus—
R. Christopher Teichler. The pairing of
Wesley's well-known text with a sensitive
new melody is a warm invitation to Advent.
Equally hopeful and pensive, the beautiful
writing captures the reality of the season:
waiting in quiet darkness as the light of
Christmas grows. Accessible to choirs of all
sizes, this is easily learned in a few rehearsals.

The Coming Joy—arr. Joseph M. Martin.
Inventively combining the tunes Ding! Dong!
Merrily on High and Good King Wenceslas,
this anthem captures Mary's joy. The setting
combines the Magnificat text with the first
tune and an original text with the second.
Sequencing "glorias" recur, adding formal
unity and seasonal celebration, and "Mary" can
be sung by a solo. Accompany with piano or
optional orchestration.

voices, this is Paul Manz's most performed
work, and it is equally beautiful if presented

Easter and another for Advent. In either season
(or both), it is sure to surprise your congregation

God of the Watching Ones—Lee Dengler.
The urgency of Advent is felt from the very
opening notes of this fervent prayer to "God
of the watching ones" for the Savior's healing
peace. Slowly building in intensity and longing,
it leads to a declaration: "We are the watching
ones." Inspired by Herb Frombach's lyric, Lee
Dengler has set it for SATB a cappella voices
with minimal divisi.

Hope Is a Star (A Candle Lighting Ceremony
for Advent)—Joel Raney. Designed to support
the lighting of the Advent candles, this piece
includes a choral opening based on Coventry
Carol, followed by a call-and-response litany with
piano underscore, then a text to be read with the
lighting of the candles. As that concludes, the
choir comes back in with the option of adding the
congregation for an original melody calling for
peace on earth and for the Light of Light to end our
darkness. There are five readings, one for each
candle. Reproducible parts for the congregation
and seven optional handbells are included.

your heart and receive, hope of the world:
Emmanuel." Sensitive choral writing makes
this a joy to teach and sing. It is written in minor
and can be accompanied by keyboard alone,
orchestration, or rhythm parts.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence—Chad
Fothergill. A really beautiful introduction
establishes the tone for this glorious
congregation/choir setting, which was the
highlight of the 2019 Christmas at Duke Chapel
program. Accompanied by organ and strings,
verses one and four are unison, verse two is
SATB a cappella, and verse three suggests the
congregation in canon. It closes with a brilliant,
thrilling finish.
