Tuvayhun (Beatitudes for a Wounded
World)—Kim Andre Arnesen. Grammy-
nominated for Best Engineered Classical
Album, Tuvayhun has a moving text by
Charles Anthony Silvestri. This innovative
80-minute major work is based on the
Beatitudes, with a message of inclusion,
trust, kindness, compassion, humanity, and
mutual respect. With a mix of Aramaic and
English text, this moving work incorporates
ancient and contemporary styles and ideals.
The modern hybrid style includes theatrical
elements and influences of classical,
jazz, and world music. Scored for either
treble or mixed choirs with baritone, alto,
and child soprano soloists, the work is
accompanied by strings, flutes, hammered
dulcimer (cimbalom), harp, and a variety of
other percussion and world instruments to
create its unique sound and presentation.

Chorus and artistic director Michelle Oesterle
in 2018, this work is socially responsive and
shines a light on modern issues affecting
our world such as poverty, the refugee
crisis, discrimination, and persecution. 18
movements including new choral favorites

A Vision Unfolding—Kyle Pederson.
Centered around themes of social justice, this
extended work invites the choir and audience
into a compelling vision of a world rooted in
compassion, freedom, inclusivity, and justice.
Each of the five movements is accompanied by
piano, while some also include optional violin,
trumpet, and snare drum. Spoken-word poetry
written by Shanelle Gabriel is interwoven
before, between, and within movements,
though choirs are also welcome to perform
their own spoken-word narration throughout
the work. In addition to Gabriel's poetry, other
texts are by Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman,
Robert Bode, and Kyle Pederson. Movements
may be performed as a complete set or
purchased separately.

You Are Enough: A Mental Health Suite—
Aron Accurso. This three-movement suite
for tenor-bass choirs is intended to elevate
conversations regarding mental health. The
composer brings his sense of the dramatic to
this powerful score. The first movement, Inside
the Storm, is a cappella and filled with lyrics and
harmonies that create a sense of questioning
and discomfort. The second, A Thought
Storm, is tumultuous, like an onslaught of
negative thoughts, with spoken dialog, aleatoric
singing, a dramatic piano accompaniment,
and lyrics that begin with a negative bent and
gradually transition to more positive thoughts.
The final movement, You Are Enough, has a
modern, musical-theater quality that expresses
inspirational and empowering lyrics with
memorable melodies. A fitting conclusion to a
discussion on this challenging subject.
