ORIGNAL CONCERT WORKS medium-easy
Dark Adventure—Ralph Ford. It's ghostly! It's
creepy! Your orchestra will love it! From the
driving opening motives to the quirky gypsy-
sounding theme, this is haunted-house music
at its best! You can play this with either full or
string orchestra, but the percussion section is
really vital and should be used in both cases.
This is recommended and will thrill and delight
your audience! A winner!

Dark Journey—Doug Spata. Students will
love the contemporary style as they explore
a variety of articulations, dotted rhythms,
and offbeat eighth notes. Every section gets
a turn at playing the melody, with special
interest in the bass section expanding the
range in several positions. Energetic staccato
accompaniments push the bold E minor theme
to a triumphant conclusion.

Double Trouble—Lauren Bernofsky. Here's
a punchy teaching tune to make the key of D
come to life! All the voices have fun with the
edgy and rhythmic eighth note "double trouble"
motif. Emphasis on accents and tight ensemble
playing will make this a class favorite!

Down by the Riverside—arr. Renata Bratt. This
fantastic arrangement of this New Orleans-style
African American spiritual will make a toe-tapping
closer. Every instrument in the string orchestra
has its moment to shine. Overlapping melodic
riffs throughout add to the fun! Syncopated
rhythms in the accompaniment and melodic
parts reinforce your students' reading skills. After
the initial presentation of the tune, more and
more groups of instruments join to play melodic
riffs, many times over top of each other, just like
what you would hear a New Orleans jazz band
play in a second-line parade. (3:10)

spewing, eyes-blazing, slimy-scaled mythical
creature in this dramatic work! This excellent
teaching piece features many techniques,
including hooked bowings, slurs, lifts, accents,
pizzicato, tremolo, and a few high three-
finger patterns in upper strings. Written in the
keys of A minor and E minor, all parts have
interesting moving lines and melodies as well
as wonderfully rich chordal harmonies. Sure to
be a pleasing addition to any concert or festival.

Eat My (Rosin) Dust—Brian Balmages. This
spirited, high energy work encompasses all the
attitude expressed in its title! The orchestra's true
personality shines as it moves between technical
off-the-string passages and soaring melodies.
Combine that with syncopated rhythmic ideas
and one can see why the title is so fitting. As
playful as the title is, this certainly is not a novelty
piece. It is a technical, yet extremely playable
showcase for your orchestra.

time charming and mystifying, as if in a magical
garden where wondrous experiences delight
the senses. Each part is unique in conveying
how the senses are stimulated by sight and

exciting work for string orchestra depicting a
daring escape and an epic journey. Driving
accented 3/4 rhythms in A minor build
tension and momentum, developing into
soaring themes in major tonalities. Following
the protagonist on a heroic quest, students
will experience dramatic dynamics, slurs,
and string crossings in familiar first position.

The Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart—Alan
Lee Silva. Based on the classic Edgar Allan
Poe short story "The Tell-Tale Heart," this work
is reminiscent of a classic Hollywood horror
movie theme. The piano and optional harp and
percussion parts punctuate the tension and
suspense that is felt from the first note to the
last. The basses act as the low, ominous threat
of danger, and the upper voices represent the
insanity of the main character's twisted plan.
A real thriller!

Fantasia on a Theme from Thailand—
Richard Meyer. This captivating work is a set
of variations on the Pong Lang Dance, one of
Thailand's most popular melodies. The pong
lang is like a xylophone with its wooden keys
suspended vertically on ropes, with the low
notes on the upper end and the high notes at
the bottom. The melody uses the pentatonic
scale and is very simple in nature. The
variations expand on fragments of the original
tune in a variety of tempi and styles that make
each new change thrilling! After this exploration,
the original melody returns, gradually gaining
speed and energy as one would hear in a
traditional performance of this dance.

Fantasy on "Aloha 'Oe"—Queen Lili'uokalani/
arr. Brian Balmages. This gorgeous fantasy is
based on the well-known Hawaiian song Aloha
'Oe, written by Queen Lili'uokalani. Translated
as "Farewell to Thee," it works extremely well
both as a lyrical portion of a program or as a
part of an emotional send-off to celebrate
graduating students. Beautiful harmonic twists
are masterfully intertwined in a work that is
extremely accessible to younger students yet
sounds mature enough to be enjoyed by more
accomplished ensembles. Absolutely stunning.

Fragile—Randall Standridge. Drawing from
his own experiences with depression, this
mature work for young ensembles by Randall
Standridge is a meditation on the lives of those
who live with mental health conditions. At
times melancholy, terrifying, triumphant, and
confused, it is carefully tailored to be accessible
to younger ensembles and to provide programs
with a tool to spark discussions about mental
health. Beautiful melodies, colorful scoring,
and an aleatoric moment create a stunning
work that will leave an impact on players and
audiences alike. Part of Standridge's unBroken
Project, it highlights all sections equally
throughout the work, with a lush opening
viola soli and an emotional solo violin moment
featuring optional shifting.
