ORIGNAL CONCERT WORKS medium-easy
Legends of Courage—Kathryn Griesinger.
This courageous, forceful melody uses
frequent doubling of sections to add strength
and volume to the developing string orchestra.
Legends of fearless bravery are heard in the
determined theme, punctuated with heavy
staccato accompaniments. Players will
experience extended finger patterns and rising
and falling dynamics that depict the inevitable
defeats but also the glory of victory in battle.
After a brief lyrical middle section, the steady
march returns in the low strings, bringing the
ensemble back to a triumphant conclusion.

Legends of Glory—Kathryn Griesinger. As
ancient voices recall tales of forgotten glory,
a sacred moment of reflection gives way to a
stormy battle in the cello and bass sections
and builds to a victorious key change to A
minor. With just a little third position in first
violin, this is an accessible and exciting work
for developing players.

lyrical work evokes the emotions of returning
home, with ambivalent feelings of sadness
and joy, uncertainty, steadiness, hope, and
triumph as the music moves between minor
and major. Everyone gets to play melody lines,
with pizzicato and divisi, shifting in violin 1, and
plenty of opportunities for expressive playing
and legato bow strokes. (3:15)

Lotus—Yukiko Nishimura. Lotus, by Yukiko
Nishimura, was inspired by the flower. The
Lotus is known as a symbol of the sun because
it closes at night and reopens at dawn. This
stunning piece is full of dramatic harmonies
and flowing melodies. Each part offers the
opportunity for heartfelt and expressive
performance. An interesting fact about the
Lotus; when the flower blooms, it makes a
faint popping sound, though it's rare to hear
unaided. The composer uses pizzicato in the
lower instruments at the beginning of the piece
to invoke the sound of the bloom. (3:30)

to play. Written in the string-friendly key of D
minor, this lively tango includes interesting parts
for all sections and an idiomatic percussion
ensemble accompaniment.

Momentum—Richard Meyer. A great
choice for your next concert or contest! This
provides a wide variety of outstanding teaching
opportunities while using a fresh, contemporary
sound that your students will love! As the title
suggests, a driving, rhythmic pulse permeates
this modern original, but the piece incorporates
two diverse moods: a highly rhythmic first
section in B Minor, built on rising and falling
thirds, followed by a simple chorale in folk
song style. Once this slow material is passed
around the energy is re-established with earlier
material. A solid work for concert and contest.
