Jazz-Rock & Funk | Medium
Crunchy Frog—Gordon Goodwin. Bass
and guitar kick off this original Gordon
Goodwin chart with a captivating rhythmic
pattern before the full ensemble settles
in with the funky melody. There's plenty
of ensemble writing, some in unison and
some in harmony, and solo space for all
winds with suggested or improv solos. The
lead trumpet range goes to written G-sharp
on top of the staff, the tempo is around 115
beats per minute, and optional parts are
included for expanded instrumentations.
This is accessible Gordon Goodwin
material that is right in the pocket for this
grade level! Our highest recommendation!

Don't Steal My Stuff—Gordon Goodwin.
Gordon Goodwin wrote this funky chart
at the medium grade level to showcase
trumpet 1 and trombone 1. Everything is
written out, including the melody duet, the
solos, and the featured trades. The tempo
is very accessible at 160 bpm, it's easy to
assemble, and it's fun to play!

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough—Michael
Jackson/arr. Dallas Burke. This funky
hit from Michael Jackson's Off the Wall
album translates into a groovin' jazz chart
everyone will enjoy. With lots of tasty licks
for the winds and very playable grooves for
the rhythm section, this chart is a winner!
10456820 Jazz Ensemble. . . . . . 65.00
The Egg—Dan Kramlich. "Which came
first?" is of little significance so long as the
groove keeps going. Your band and your
audience will have fun with this funky piece!

Fast Track Shuffle—Doug Beach. Here's
a laid-back, fun, and hip shuffle that swings

will be an impressive and easygoing
addition to your concert program.

Feels So Good—Chuck Mangione/arr.
Victor Lopez. Only rarely does a jazz
tune cross over to the pop charts the way
this Chuck Mangione classic did back
in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the
1st trumpet part is featured throughout
with the distinctive melody and then with
a written or ad lib solo along with a tenor
solo. The flugelhorn solo range is up to
an optional written high C, but the solo is
cued on the 1st tenor part as well. Victor's
arrangement brings this contemporary
gem within the range of the developing
trumpet player without losing any of
the hip appeal of the original. Here's a
perennially appealing, samba/rock chart
that will provide outstanding performance
opportunities for your band and soloist!
Highly recommended!

Four! Fore?!—Mathew Montgomery. A
modern broken swing that takes the listener
on a journey. The ensemble section at
the beginning drives the piece forward
suspensefully, not knowing if the shot was
a hook or a slice. The rhythm section comes
in with a groove right down the fairway, and
it feels good. The piece continues featuring
a tenor sax solo and a swinging shout
section, which is par for the course.

Get After It—Jeff Jarvis. Bring the funk to
your group with this groovy chart. They can't

Gospel John—Jeff Steinberg/arr.
Andy Clark. Check out this incredible
arrangement of Maynard Ferguson's gospel
favorite...it's hot as ever, but now any high
school with a decent trumpet player can
play it! Andy Clark's arrangement closely
follows Maynard's recorded version, except
for a much more playable introduction,
new backgrounds for the solos and some
rewriting in the trumpet parts (1st tpt. still
goes to an "E"). This one is going to be
played for a long, long time!

Honk—Jeff Jarvis. Ever since the
widespread
popularity of the Jeff Jarvis
funk original Critical Mass, requests for a
sequel have been pouring in. At last, Jeff
has composed and arranged Honk, with all
the characteristics that made its predecessor
such a hit with jazz ensembles, only at a
slightly more accessible level. Like Critical
Mass, Honk begins with a cool sax section
introduction, clearly placing your baritone
saxophonist in the limelight, but without
excessive technical demands. Everyone
has interesting and challenging parts to play
throughout and the modulation near the end
gives it an extra, added lift. The solos are
open and the backgrounds can be varied
by instrumentation. This one is hot from
beginning to end! Very highly recommended!

Hurricane Season—Troy Andrews/arr.
John Wasson. From the Trombone Shorty
CD Backatown, this tune features the
powerful underlying pulse of a New Orleans
second line feel along with elements of
contemporary rock. There's written or
improvised solo space for trumpet. In this
exciting chart, the ensemble alternately
screams with the full band riffs, then settles
into a simmering rhythmic groove. Also
included are written bass lines and piano
voicings. A real treat to perform and hear!

I Love Lucy—arr. Paul Baker. Check
out this hip-hop setting by Paul Baker on
the famous TV theme. Unique, but very
appealing, it's loaded with wonderful writing,
great development, written or improvised
solos for trumpet, tenor sax, and drums, a hip
sax soli, and the lead trumpet range is only to
written G on top of the staff. This outstanding
chart is also playable with optional expanded
instrumentations. This arranger does this
style extremely well and this one is no
exception. Highly recommended!

It's Our Turn Now—Erik Sherburne. A rock

and anyone at the end of the solo section
can take a turn.

Make Me Smile—James Pankow/arr. John
Wasson. One of the first tunes to put the

to the original in this outstanding version for
jazz ensemble that features solos for alto
sax, guitar, and all the signature horn licks.
Suggested solos are included along with
chord/scale sheets in all keys.

Quirky, unexpected, and a total blast to
play - this one's not your typical take on a
classic! Top trumpet note: C6
