On Edge—Susan Day. On Edge refers to
a feeling of nervousness and suspense,
and is the opposite of calm and relaxed.
This piece conveys the feeling of urgency
and anticipation through rapid 8th note
passages in all parts and the sound of the
minor key. Written in the keys of D minor
and E minor, there are 2 main themes
intertwined throughout the parts, with
portions of them played simultaneously at
measure 33. A multitude of teaching skills
for reinforcement include 2 note slurs, the
note Bb, dotted quarter rhythms, hooked
bowings, arpeggios, steady 8th notes, bow
placement and distribution, note doubling,
and knowing who has the melody! This is a
great teaching piece and fun for the player
and audience!

sounding, minor-key jig uses only three
basic 6/8 rhythms to give your students the
confidence they need to navigate a too-often
neglected time signature. Pieces of Eight
gives every section a turn at the fun and
catchy melody while the repeated patterns in

Rejoice!—Michael Hopkins. Composed for
the tenth anniversary of a school orchestra
program, the music is fast and celebratory
with high energy throughout. This is a great
piece for working on crisp articulations,
off-the-string bow strokes, and contrasts
between legato and staccato. Slight
separation of the quarter notes gives the
music a dance-like, celebratory character.

Rhythmania—Ingrid Koller. The focus
is on counting to stay on track in this
mixed-meter piece. This Level 1.5 piece
in D major introduces mixed meters in a
fun and engaging way. The piece moves
between 6/8 and 2/4, but there are lots of
eighth notes to subdivide the beats and
help with counting. A contrasting D minor
section allows the students to settle into
6/8 for a while, but soon the original mixed-
meter melody returns. Every section gets a
chance to shine as they play the melody,
and every section gets to provide the
important subdivided harmony part. Striking
the right balance between challenge and
fun, this is the perfect piece to introduce
young string players to the very important
skill of counting in mixed meters.

tone. Playable entirely in first position (up to
third position in bass). Optional fingerings
specifically meant to teach cellists how to
avoid open A are provided. (2:50)

Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer
Space—Richard Meyer. Don't miss this! If
there is one piece your developing orchestra
will love rehearsing and performing, it's this
one! This programmatic piece spins a tale
of mayhem and mischief as the rosin eating
zombies take over your stage complete
with blood-curdling screams, glissandos,
ponticello and more. All the eerie effects
are clearly explained and notated, so the
only trouble you'll have is getting your
students to stop playing it. It's a wild ride
you won't want to miss!

Rosin Up, Riders—Thom Sharp. Ride
tall in the saddle as you play this delightful
cowboy two-beat piece in G major. Feel the
gentle trot of your trusty steed as an eighth-
note "duk-a-dak-a" rhythm is traded about
by all sections but the basses. While mostly
diatonic, the basses do have a passing
D sharp in the A section, and there are a
few E flats and F naturals in the moodier
B section. Legato passages that contrast
the clip-clop rhythm come and go as you
progress through the work, conjuring
images of the open prairie in this highly
evocative piece.

Rounds Before a Storm (Short Themes
from a Ship Overseas Series)—Thomas,
Liam. Short Themes from a Ship Overseas
is a series of short pieces for string orchestra
(originally written for guitar quartet) that
explores a sense of wonder that is invoked
by a dream of sailing over the vast open
seas and oceans of the world. At some
point in one's life, the idea of sailors, pirates,
and treasure is an inspiration to that fuels
imagination filled with adventure. These
pieces explore that concept in a musical
form and transfer these ideas using themes,
textures, and ideas that are inspired by the
open seas. The entire series is adventurous
and great fun for all ages as parameters are
shaped to fit the theme and also innovate.
"Rounds Before a Storm" is a round in which
all the melodic voices enter one after another
and imitate the original voice. Although it
deviates in some ways from the purest kind
of round, the imitative nature will make for a
unique texture that's fun for each instrument!
