23 Balatro—Minoo Dixon. Winner of the 2024 NBA Young Band Composition Contest, this bold and eccentric work invites students and listeners into the mind of a balatro – Latin for jester or buffoon. This imaginative piece introduces young musicians to the intriguing octatonic scale in a way that's both thoughtful and accessible, providing a fast- paced, captivating journey through fluid tonal shifts. Despite its tonal playfulness, the piece remains anchored to the familiar comfort of concert B-flat, offering an ideal blend of exploration and stability. An amalgamation of several themes and melodies interspersed with fanfares that came to me after losing my grandfather to complications from a severe stroke in 2015. The title reflects the relief from his suffering and my own journey to release myself from the darkness that enveloped me due to his absence. I hope this piece brings comfort and solace to those who are grieving or are facing hardships in life. In 2015, I had the privilege of conducting the initial version of this composition with the Pensacola State College Wind Ensemble, guided by Mr. Don Snowden. His mentorship and support allowed me to share my music and marked a significant milestone in my development as a composer and conductor.
