Balatro—Minoo Dixon. Winner of the 2024
NBA Young Band Composition Contest,
this bold and eccentric work invites students
and listeners into the mind of a balatro –
Latin for jester or buffoon. This imaginative
piece introduces young musicians to the
intriguing octatonic scale in a way that's both
thoughtful and accessible, providing a fast-
paced, captivating journey through fluid tonal
shifts. Despite its tonal playfulness, the piece
remains anchored to the familiar comfort
of concert B-flat, offering an ideal blend of
exploration and stability. A fresh, innovative
addition to the concert band repertoire, sure
to surprise and delight all. (3:55)

Bound, No Longer—Braden Dees. An
amalgamation of several themes and
melodies interspersed with fanfares that
came to me after losing my grandfather to
complications from a severe stroke in 2015.
The title reflects the relief from his suffering
and my own journey to release myself from
the darkness that enveloped me due to his
absence. I hope this piece brings comfort
and solace to those who are grieving or are
facing hardships in life. In 2015, I had the
privilege of conducting the initial version of
this composition with the Pensacola State
College Wind Ensemble, guided by Mr.
Don Snowden. His mentorship and support
allowed me to share my music and marked
a significant milestone in my development
as a composer and conductor. I have him
to thank for always pushing me to do my
best in my musical endeavors and allowing
me a platform to share my music.
