Adoration—Florence B. Price/arr. Steve Olson.
Originally composed for organ by African-
American composer Florence B. Price in 1951.
With its slow, expressive melodies, this piece is
a great opportunity for younger orchestras to work
on bow distribution and vibrato. All parts except for
a small section for the basses are playable in first
position, making it an excellent transition piece for
shifting exercises. The arrangement captures the
beauty and richness of the original composition.

Allegro agitato—R. Christopher Teichler. Filled
with energy and suspense from the opening six
notes played by the low strings and through to
the final measure, this is rhythmically charged
with dramatic phrasing and sweeping dynamics.
Although the music is quite expressive, it often
feels turbulent and a sense of unrest creeps in as
the music builds to climactic moments.

Zamacueca—José White Lafitte/arr. Robert
Debbaut. The Zamacueca dance has Andean
and Peruvian roots, incorporating indigenous and
Spanish elements. Afro-Cuban composer José
White Lafitte likely picked up this style while living
in South America. In his original composition for
solo violin, White utilized pizzicato to imitate the
traditional guitar, harmonizing the lighthearted
melody with frequent double stops. Here, this
sparkling solo showpiece has been arranged for
string orchestra, spreading the rhythmic music
throughout every section.

Adagio for Strings—Samuel Barber. Originally
written as the slow movement of a string quartet,
this musical treasure was singled out by conductor
Arturo Toscanini, who asked Barber for a string
orchestra arrangement. It was played on a
national radio broadcast following the death of
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and has been
part of the national consciousness ever since.
This is a work of singular beauty and calls for great
expressiveness and control.

Allegro Moderato (from "Symphony No. 3")—
Camille Saint-Saëns/arr. Deborah Baker Monday.
This movement of the famous "Organ Symphony"
includes two of the most memorable themes
ever penned by Saint-Saens. This arrangement
includes the highly energetic string theme and
the beautiful fugue based on his four-note theme
which cycles throughout the entire symphony. The
two contrasting sections of this arrangement offer
two extremes of bowing style: one requiring heavy
strokes at the frog and the other using legato,
expressive, full bowing.

Bolero for Strings—Maurice Ravel/arr. Cameron
Law. This version of Ravel's iconic Bolero reduces
the duration of the piece by two-thirds while still
maintaining the long buildup of volume, intensity,
and heavy orchestration. A masterful scoring of a
large symphonic work for string orchestra while
maintaining the integrity of the original Spanish/
Cuban dance. Violins, violas, and cellos all get to
try their hands at this famous melody.
