Quiet Revolutionary—Rosephanye Powell. This
six-minute set of three pieces is in celebration
of Dr. Eileen Southern, author of The Music of
Black Americans: A History. The composer says,
"In Quiet Revolutionary, I sought to depict Dr.
Southern's delicate state of bliss through jazz
harmonies, sparse accompaniment, and simplicity
of form, lyrics, dynamics, melody, and rhythms.
The piano introduction depicts Dr. Southern
quietly at work, unaware of the passage of time."
It's an excellent work honoring the legacy of a
Black female scholar and musician.

The Sacred Dance of Life—Sean Ivory.
"I sometimes forget that I was created for Joy..."
14th-century Persian poet Hafiz's text reminds us

become ensnared. Rhythmic and upbeat, this
work for mixed divisi choir, piano, and clarinet
dances through tonal centers and meters with
exuberance and unbridled joy.

Thanks (Gratias, from "Help, Thanks, Wow")—
Philip E. Silvey. The second in a set of three pieces
based onAnne Lamott's Help, Thanks, Wow: The
Three Essential Prayers, the composer expounds
upon Lamott's unique take on keeping prayer
simple. Translating her words into Latin, one word
for each "essential prayer," this piece also includes
short English phrases that focus on gratitude. A
gentle melodic line and a thoughtful piano part give
this a peaceful and meditative quality.

Undine Smith Moore. This re-release is a
captivating setting of an African American spiritual
first published in 1977. The lyrics tell of being a

The Wanderer—Alex Wakim. In a modern style
with Arabic influence, this stark work channels the
raw emotions of displacement through powerful
lines, short Armenian chants, and percussive
elements. Inspired by the haunting text of poems
from the Armenian genocide in both Armenian
and English, this original work captures the
rage, sorrow, and fear of being torn from one's
homeland. A transliteration and pronunciation
guide for the Armenian text is provided.
