Liturgical Christmas Anthems for Adult Choir
Cradle Song—Robert Neumeyer. For
seasonal worship or school concerts, this
lovely setting of Blake's text focuses on the
inherent clash between the corruption of
the world and the innocence of youth. The
choral verses progress from SA to TB to
SATB, with a hint of dissonance and a brief
a cappella section leading to the ending.

Gloria (from Mariazeller Messe)—
Joseph Haydn/ed. Ryan Kelly. Haydn's
eighth setting of the Ordinary of the Mass
was composed in 1782 for performance
in Mariazell, Austria. The brief opening
portion of the Gloria has been selected
for this setting, featuring Haydn's
exuberant, straightforward homophonic
choral writing true to the Classical period.
The accompaniment is an approachable
orchestral reduction for piano with optional
trumpets and timpani. Accessible to most
ensembles, the work offers choirs the
exciting opportunity to sing an excerpt from
a large-scale choral work.

Equally effective a cappella or with the
optional piano accompaniment, this
dynamic work with the traditional Latin
text is a great choice as an opener for
either Christmas or general programming.
A fanfare opening with call-and-response
harmonies contrasts with a more sedate
and lyrical middle section before resuming
the opening feel. It's an ideal choice for
concerts, festivals, or services.

His Light in Us—Kim André Arnesen.
Commissioned by the St. Olaf Choir for the
2016 St. Olaf Christmas Festival, this work
is a thanksgiving, a song about the gift of a
tiny child that suggests that only the nature
of love is changeless. It sings about our
renewed hope and how light now shines
because Christmas is a new and refreshing
gift; our hearts are renewed, and our hope
is renewed. This joyful reflection was written
for Christmas, but can be sung at any time
of year as a song of hope.

Iesous ahatonnia'—arr. Sarah Quartel.
With newly composed text from Wendat
poet Andree Levesque Sioui, this
reimagined arrangement of the Huron Carol
is retitled to honor its origins and invites us
to learn from the past while working to
shape a more cohesive future. There are
extensive notes about the history and texts
of the carol included in the octavo, and
the arrangement gives the option to sing
an English text. It is a beautiful choice for
Christmas concerts or services.

In the Bleak Midwinter—Harold Darke.
The classic 1911 Darke setting of Rossetti's
poem frequently appears in the King's
College Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
program. The vocal solos can be sung by
sections, and the organ accompaniment
adds color. It's a stunning addition to any
Christmas service or program.

In the Bleak Midwinter—Gustav Holst/
arr. Robert J. Powell. The poignancy
of Gustav Holst's tune CRANHAM and
Christina Rossetti's notable poem, In
the Bleak Midwinter, is evident in this
setting by Robert Powell. The SAB vocal
tapestry varies by verse and the organ
accompaniment can be complemented by
string quartet or by solo violin and cello.

In the Bleak Midwinter—Gustav Holst &
Bruce W. Becker/arr. Kyle Pederson. This
piece pairs Holst's iconic melody with a
lesser-known melody by Bruce Becker
and augments Rossetti's text with original
lyrics that look toward the light of Christmas.
An active and independent piano
accompaniment, optional opening solo,
flowing vocal lines, and an unaccompanied
middle section make this a sensitive
selection for your Christmas program.
